NEW YORK, June 16—Bonds were active but generally reactionary today. United States Governments ranged from | steady to firm, though they were nearly twice as active as in the preceding ses- | sion. ] In the foreign list new highs on the present move were attained by French 78 and 7‘# with strength in German 5%s and s Kingdom loans. Second-grade rails were in fairly sharp contrast with gilt-edged carriers, as the former turned over in increasing | volume on the downside while the latter | gfln \Zwlrd Late selling of rails ‘Thursday’s session influenced fore- noon movements today. There was no trade news to account for the easiness of thue high-grade and ‘medium-grade issues. The decline in speculative bonds con- tinued into the afternoon, when second and third grade rails were weak. In- dustrial debentures again took their cue from the trend of their respective con- vertible shares. Even some of the high- grade issues, such as rails and utilities, moved lower. (Copyright, 1938.) An experienced business man recently made a_study of the way that retail | stores, both large and small, . He discovered that too many judged ad- vertising results| solely on the basis of sales produced | the next day and failed to take into account the value of the new cus- tomers brought in. For a new cus- tomer making even a small purchase may be for many dollars of purchases by the end of the year. He found that only mail order houses had a definite idea of what they could afford to spend to add & new name to their books and were willing to spend $10 to secure a new customer. Continuing his study he found that average active customers were estimated to be good for the following yearly purchases: Department stores, $362; women's ready-to-wear stores, $236; furniture stores, $87; men’s furnishings, $85; shoe stores, $35 to $60, depending on the size of the family. Of course, with varying conditions estimates. But only by such estimates can advertising plans and expenditures be intelligently made. (Copyright, 1933, by the Bell Syndicate. Inc.)
