NEW YORK, May 15—Taking the stock market as a whole, prices made little progress in either direction to- day. Standard issues were lower most of the time and the selling had the upper hand at the close. On the other hand, varicus specialties were bid up con- spicuously. Commodities were weak. Following the death of Frank A. Munsey, William ‘T. Dewart of New York was made resident. Mr. %ewart‘ also president of the New York Sun, is still serving the bank in this capacity. Wilton J. Lambert, who was elected counsel 20 years ago, continues in that acity. CB’}I)‘hL' most interesting incident in the carcer of the Munsey Trust happened only six months after the bank opened for business. The United States Trust Co. faced failure and Mr. Munsey went to the rescue. He took over the bank and saved nearly $8,000,000 for about 60,000 depositors. The action furnished one of the most dramatic moves in ‘Washington's financial history, Mr. Munsey pledging a large amount of his personal fortune in order to carry out his plan. The company has had & very successful career. Munsey Trust’s present officers and directors include William T. Dewart, president; Wilton J. Lambert, vice pres- ident and counsel; C. H. Pope, vice president and treasurer; C. D. Rat- cliffe, vice president and assistant treasurer; T. C. Willis, secretary and assistant treasurer, and P. J. McMahon, assistant treasurer. Coast Line's Earnings Jump. Atlantic Coast Line, strongest road of the South, and controlling Louis- ville & Nashville through ownership of 51 per cent of the stock, has devel- oped this year a very favorable earnings | trend, especially with respect to net| earnings, the Wall Street Journal com- | s. P ®@ith net operating income for the first three months of the year 49.4 per cent ahead of the corresponding period last year, April net operating income is expected to be about double that of Jast year, when jt was $351.666. The May ‘trend to date is also understood to be very favorable and net earnings for the current month are likely to make impressive comparison with the operating deficit of $225,118 of May, 1932 C. H. This is the great staple crop of the South and higher prices spell a general improvement in conditions of the whole territory. Opening prices were irregularly lower. |For an hour or so the selling was a |little more than the market could take without receding from fractions to a point or two. At the same time there Wwas no real weakness and a few stocks stocd out against the trend. Among the latter National Distilleries Products and the alcohol shares were prominent, 3 | most of them at new highs for the year, 11+ 1L+ 100+ i reflecting the fact that the law liberal- lizing and regulations regarding pre- scriptions of liquor by physicians went into effect today. Another strong spot | was Worthington Pumn common, to- gether with the A and B preferred issues. . Stocks were affected by the weakness in commodities, particularly the break in cotton. ~Another deterrent to opera- tions for the rise was the unsettled po- litical conditions abroag, but the main factor was the extent of the recent ad- vance and the suspicion that it had undermined the technical position. Trade news was generally favorable. Motor car sales, so far as statistics are available, were larger in April than in the preceding month and near those of the same month a year ago. Trade authorities declared that steel produc- tion was still gaining ground and re- ports from the textile industry were all optimistic. Losses of a point or over were re- corded during the early selling in such stocks as Allied Chemical, American Can, Air Reduction, Westinghouse Elec- tric, Johns-Manville and Corn Products. Sugar shares were heavy and the rails |irregularly lower. Security Gains Helping Banks, It was reported in the financial dis- trict today that the recent advances in stocks and bonds have materially helped the position of ‘Washington's 13 closed banks. In the past few days many people have been able to sell collateral put up cn loans and get out even and mI many instances have a profit. Cus- tomers have been visiting the closed banks in quite large numbers and wip- ing their loans off the slate. This situation is gratifying to the customer and still more helpful to the banks. If the present strength in stocks and bonds is maintained for some time. the position of many of the closed banks will be much improved. Had the upturn come sooner, some of them might have not have been forced into their present status. Thepprapcsed merger of the District National, Federal-American, Potomac Savings and Washington Savings Banks into a new central bank was widely discussed in thé financial district today. It is fully expected that at least two other cloced banks will join the move. The general opinion today apveared to b> that it is the best step these banks can take under present circumstances and should prove beneficial to the de- positors. The fact that the plan has Treasury sanction is also given great weight. Local Exchange Unusually Busy. The Washington Stock Exchange started the week with record trading. Both bonds and stocks were in de- mand. . Potomac Electric consclidated 5s opened business with two $1,000 sales at 1027,. Potomac Electric Power 6s came ‘out at 10712. The day’s largest business was in the Potomac Electric consolidated: 5s; which again appeared after call, $2,000, $10,000 and $1.000 selling at 102. Washington Gas 5s, 1960, figured in a $500 turnover at 102 and two $1,000 sales in Capital Traction 5s were regis- tered at 42. Pctomac Electric Power 5 per cent preferred was the most active stock on the board. This sold in small lots at 109 and 109'. The corporation’s 52 per cent preferred was also in demand at 105 and 105'5.
