SEABURY CANPAGH FORMAYOR BOOHS Chances Enhanced by With- drawal of Smith From New York Race. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 15.—“Draft-Sea- bury-for-Mayor” drive boomed along to- day over the wreckage of a “draft- Smith” movement demolished by Alfred E. Smith himself. Smith's statement that under” “no compulsion or persuasion” would he ac- cept a nomination for mayor in the Fall election was regarded in political circles as strengthening the cause of those who seek to nominate Samuel Seabury, foe of Tammany. Declared Logical Candidate. Prominent fusionists, plus some Re- publican leaders, saw Smith’s state- ment as clearing the air for Seabury’s nomination. Archie O. Dawson, presi- deir:it. of the Young Republican Club, said: “The elimination of Gov. Smith leaves Samuel Seabury as the logical fusion candidate.” Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, Repub- lican, who recently advocated Smith for mayor, said when he learned of the former Governor's refusal: “That takes out of consideration the best fitted man for the office at this critical time.” Conducted Walker Probe.
