OND PRGES GAN W ACTIVE WARK Junior Rail Group Featured on Upside—Government List Firm. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. .-NEW YORK, May 10.—The bond market today reversed its trend of the day previous and in a uniformly higher price range not only recovered most of “Tuesday's losses, but was able to show many net gains for the week. This strength was accompanied by more ac- tive trading and followed an opening that had promised little in the way of volume or of trend. The most considerable gains were in the junior rails, as it was in this group that the heaviest profit-taking had oc- turred Tuesday. Some of the best ad- vances in this list were 2 points each 1if’ Erie refunding 5s of 1967 and 1975, Baltimore & Ohio refunding 5s, Chesa- peake Corporation s, St. Paul general 53, Rock Island 41:s, New York Central refunding 5s, Southern Pacific 412s and Southern Railway 6s. The optimistic statements by a number of railroad ex- eeutives on the car loading outlook contributed to the better feeling with respect to these and other bonds in the same category. Industrial issues made some response te the reports of broadening activity in several lines of trade. United Drug 5s were up 2 points to & new high for the year and United States Rubber 5s gained fractionally. Youngstown Sheet & Tube 5s recovered most of Tuesday's Joss of 2 points. The tire and rubber cbmpany issues were also strong, and in spite of the production war in the ol industry the bonds of the oil companies were surprisingly firm. In the com- munication company list distinct firm- ness was exhibited by International ’I‘nlephone & Telegraph and Postal Tele- raph loans. American & Foreign Power 55 Philadelphia Co. 5s and Utility Power & Light 5s were all higher. , One of the most significant develop- ments was the rise in the high-grade rails and public utilities. Atchison gen- eral 4s advanced over a point, selling at 9113 early in the day, compared with 1pst week's low of 85';. American Tele- phone & Telegraph debenture 5s of 1965 were up a point, selling above par. The market for United States Treas- ury loans was quiet, but steady. Nearly all of the foreign groups were strong.
