The Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- fmond reports improvement in employ- ment during the past few days. This will naturally expand the spending of money in this territory in the near fu- ture. The Fifth District includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, Vir- ‘ginia, West Virginia, North and South ‘Carolina. Retail trade in the early part of May has also shown expansion, especially in retail lines, according to Richmond reports. Both wholesale and retail col- lections have shown favorable increases. The' tobacco factories have recently called back hundreds of workers and textile plants are now running near capacity. The agricultural situation is Teported as favorable, although planting has been somewhat retarded by wet Weather. The adjoining district to the south, the Sixth District, also reports im- proved conditions. The Atlanta Reserve Bank reports marked improvement in several lines, especially in the depart- ment stores’ in the automobile trade. The =advance in cotton prices has already been reflected in a great deal more buying in the farming sections. In reviewing the situation in all 12 Federal Reserve districts, the New York ‘Times says that the past week's reports have been unusually optimistic. They have nearly all mentioned “improve- ment,” “pick-up,” “gains” and “recov- ery.” Sales that had been reported as Jair are now being reported as good in any parts of the country. The ad- ance in grain prices has been the big dactor in the Middle West. In New England the textile and shoe industries are leading in notable bet- terment. In Philadelphia there was a gain of $27,000,000 in bank clearings, dast week. » Loew’s, Inc.,, Reports New Profits. Insurance Men to Elect Officers. ‘The District of Columbia Life Under- writers’ Association will hold its annual election of officers next Thursday, fol- Jowing the regular luncheon at the ‘Washington Hotel. Reports of the officers and the com- mittee chairmen will also be made at this time. Three new directors will also be e)ected according to President John P. Lynch. Business was exceptionally good on the Washington Stock Exchange today when the week's trading opened. The day's sales wtaled Washmgton Railway & Electric pre- \ derred stock moved at 7912 for a single share. Mergenthaler Linotype came out at 25, four 10-share lots changing ‘hands. After call, Potomac Electric Power 6 per cent preferred stock appeared on the board, 7 shares selling at the strong Pprice of 109, Washington Gas 6s, Series B, opened “the bond trading, $200 selling at 104%p. Georgetown Gas 5s registered a $1,000 sale at 103%. Gas 6s again appeared on the board $1,000 moving at 102%. Washingwn Railway & Electric 4s Zeame out at 84%4, in $3,000 and $2,000 ‘sales. HUGHES, NEW YORK, May 8.—Selling in the last hour of today's market brought prices for stocks down to or below Sat- urday’s close after earlier strength, ‘The late reaction coincided with re- vival of reports that Frauce and Hol- land would abandon the gold standard —the same story that was responsible for the reaction in Saturday’s market. The sharp break in French and Italian bonds added to the concern over the international monetary situation and brought further selling in stocks. More or less all the groups were sen- sitive to the pressure. Du Pont dropped 3 points from its morning high. Ameri- can Telephone sold below par, off over 2 points from its best. American Can was off 2 to 3 points and the rails e down fractionally to a point or more. The dollar rallied in terms of sterling and francs in the late afternoon. Ster- ling at $3.96%, off 31, cents, and francs at 4.58 cenu were off 3 points after 5 | having been up 4 points earlier in the day. The exchange market, however, was not as agitated as the share list. Commodities were irregular. Wheat closed 2 to 1 cent a bushel lower and cotton lfls off about 50 cents a bale. Silver was strong most of the time. The market regstered satisfaction with the President’s radio address at the opening. Comment in brokerage offices was uniformly favcrable. Here and there a little disappointment was ex- pressed that he had not been more defi- nite in discussing his intentions with re- gard to inflation, but that was a minor mntur His program for agriculture and industry was regarded as highly constructive. News over the week end in regard to trade continued optimistic. This was true in particular of the demand for new motor cars while the revival in the steel trade was characterized as at- taining “runaway proportions.” Stocks opened fractionally higher and maintained their gains throughout the morning, with the metal shares taking a prominent place in the operations. Gold stocks were strong, with Dome Mines at $20 a share, a new high, the leader. Reports were heard of an ad- vance in the price of copper and the quotation for lead was marked up.
