FIN JUNIOR BOND LIST CONTINUES GAINS Rails, Utilities and Indus- trials Are Featured on Upturn. BY CHARLES F. SPEARE. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. ~EW YORK, fay 1.—The bond wurket was active today and in spots ery sWong. Higher prices were the rule in second and third grade rails, utilities, industrials and some foreign governments. United States Govern- ment Bonds, however, continued to drift toward lower levels and this same erend was in evidence in most of the gut-edge corporate securities. A brisk inquiry for short-term, high- grade loans, chiefly five to seven-year maturities, active bidding for the better grade of domestic public utility descriptions, especially those that ap- peared slightly out of line with the rest of the market, and widened purchases | of foreign bonds whose interest and principal at the option of the holder might be paid in several currencies were features of dealings. The comparative steadiness of bonds in the face of the lnflluonlry move~ ment is not so surprising. bonds only tapered slightly lfl.el’ the gold suspension in that country in 1931. FPixed revenue investments were not off much in this country in 1862. In Britain there was the avoidance of paper currency inflation. In the latter case flat money was issued with great| weluctance. ‘The rise of three Southern Rallway issues to new high levels for the year gave the move in speculative ralls its initial fmpulse. Better earnings, which dn part mirror the improvement in l,he cotten situation generally, the bidding up of issues of the Sout.h- e carrier. Preer movement of automobiles and Rccessories explained the forward move- ment of Pere Marquette issues, for the xoad is largely dependent on the auto- motive industry. Erie issues were also ‘:d up, in some cases to new high vels. Announcement of an ndnnee of 5 er cent in tire prices by . Good- Tich Co. caused its uonvemble 6s of 1954 to attain new maximum levels. Goodyear collateral 5s firmed up. News qrom the steel and metal trades lifted National Steel 5s, Otis Steel first 6s, [Youngstown Sheet & ‘Tube 5s and ‘American_Smelting 5s. On this bulge | soi'ne of these bonds attained new high | prices. Communication securities, as Postal TMelegraph 5s and Western Union 6%s, both at new peaks, featured Public Utilitles in the first few hours. Later ‘Western Union 5s and International ‘Telephone 4!28 and 5s were taken up, but the high grade debentures, like American Telephone 55 and 5s, in- clined to heaviness. South American loans, again led by the Argentine group, foreign division. Japanese securities dominated movements in the Far Eastern group. After early steadiness, Peruvian loans wavered, following the assassination of the president of that country and subsequent declaration of martial law. ‘The smallest declines in United States Governments were recorded in Treasury issues selling at a discount. Govern- ments maturing within the next 12 months amount to $3,424,026.100, being chiefly in of the form of Treas cer- tificates of indebtedness, notes and non- interest bearing bills, New York Cotton Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 1.—The advance in cotton was resumed today, and all months sold above the 8-cent figure, with October of the new crop at 8!% cents. Enormous trade and speculative buying swept over all three markets, and, absorbing liberal profit-taking, prices closed with a gain of 30 to 37 points on the day. Spots were ad- vanced 35 points to 8.25. Steel Plant Extends Schedule. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 1.—Stocks soared to new highs on the Curb Exchange today. After the market had opened higher, there was a pause. A reaction followed. Subsequently a relly set in around mid- day. Electric Bond & Share was up fractionally, along with American Gas & Electric, American Light & Trac- tion, American Superpower, Atlas Cor- poration and many others. Cities Serv- ice and Standard Oil of Indiana most of the time were lower. Constructive developments in the steel industry, where operating rates have more than doubled in recent weeks, in grains, where Farm Board wheat no longer hangs over the market, and in general trade, where wholesalers and retailers are both reporting in- creased sales, furnished the back- ground for the advance. ‘The pause that came shortly after the end of the first hour was more in the nature of a technical hesitation. It was followed by brisk bidding for the power and light issues and a general resumption of the rise over a d front. Some of the new peaks attained on the midday rally were Deere & Co., Safety Car Heating & Lighting, Singer Manufacturing, Roan Antelope, Cord Corporation, General Aviaticn, Atlas Corporation, United Shoe Machinery, Montgomery Ward, Insurance Co. of | North America, Canadian Marconi, Fajardo Sugar, Dow Chemical, Pep- perell Manufacturing, Seeman Bros., American Maize, Joseph Ryerson, Amer- ican Laundry Machinery and Parker Rust Proof. The bettered grain situation at once affected implement and farm machin- ery manufacturers, users of grain, hold- ers of milling patents and mail order shares. Later the meat packing issues firmed. United Verde Extension touched a new high after it announced March output of 3,013,188 pounds of copper against 2,710,020 in February and 3,014,232 in January. The report of Rallway & Light Securities Co. had been forecast marketwise Saturday. Parker Rust | Proof was helped to its new peak by the declaration of the regular common quarterly dividend. American it & Traction sold off on its unfavorable 12- month income_ statement. Generally, however, specific stocks brushed aside corporate developments in favor of market or broad bustness trends. Strength in cotton goods, for ém:nce, bettered Pepperell Mmu!nc- uring. POTATO MARKET. CHICAGO, May 1 (#).—(U. S. De- partment of Agriculture) — Potatoes, 181; on track, 300; total U. CHICAGO, May 1—New jumps in wheat values today took the market 7 cents a bushel than Priday’s low point and well above Saturday’s big rise, but heavy selling led to reac- tions. Near the close, prices averaged lower than Saturday. Unabated interest was shown by grain traders as to inflation develop- ments at Washington, where the House was to consider amendments to the administration farm bill. In some quarters a disposition was evident to take more notice of the farm bill itself, with its various novel features, and doubt was expressed as to whether, aside from inflation, the bill would prove bullish or bearish. Wheat closed nervous, %a% under Saturday’s finish; corn 1; off to Y4 up, oats, Y5a33 down, and provisions show- fingvg to 10 cents decline. o VHEAT: Open. July 3 Beptember Pitney Bowes P.
