When Thomas arrived shortly before lunch at Stephanson’s to give him his insulin, the great man received him with a twinkle in his eye. “Well, my dear doctor, have you got your cover?” At first Thomas didn't understand what he meant. Then he said that he was not a speculator, for he lacked both money and talent for this occupation. Stephanson, in the finest of good hu- mor said: “As for myself, I have never bought shares in any venture in which I did not have a personal interest. but this time I am amused to have all the people who are sailing on this ship with me earn money.” ¥ Stephanson’s eyes were moist with enthusiasm. “And everybody will get home. Naturally, I have made words: sure that they will be kept at a reason- able price; otherwise I wouldn't have told tales out of school. “will you allow me, doctor.” he con- cluded abruptly. “to put you in for a thousand shares?” A thousand shares—and the people whom Mr. Traugott had been dealing with had maintained that within the next few days the shares would rise 50 or even 100 marks! Thomas might ar- rive in New York with his wallet filled with money, and his whole position would be altered. “May I think it over till tea time?” he asked. Stephanson laughed. He had never before met such a comic creature as the doctor. Any one else would have gone in on a deal with him without hesitation. “Are you afraid that I might swindle | you?
