COVERNWENT BOND HCLINE RESUMES Dffigr High-Grade Securities > ower—Junior Rails i Advance. iY CHARLES F. SPEARE. #5¥ia1 Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, April 20.—Spectacular | movements continued today in the mar-, ket for bonds. The market was entirely 1ifiéét” the influence of developments in | connection with official announcement | that this country temporarily had gone offsthe gold standard. It provoked wide ‘Movements of a contrary charac- ter'in different groups of bonds, bring- ing those that had been regarded as the Mighest quality down abruptly littfig the intrinsically less valuable speculative issues by as much as 3 to 8’ points. ncactions were on a broad scale. They represented on the one hand il ation of U. S. Government loans | and 'high grade railroad and public wtility bonds, and on the other feverish ptiréhases of junior rails that had been approdching default, as well as public utility debentures and mortgage issues ‘whose “position for months has been & préoarious one. “ Anether phase of the market was the shdrp-rise in many foreign loans pay- able~in dollars. Conspicuous were the German government and corporation loans.and those of Argentina and the sevesal South American countries whose ‘external issues are now in de- fault.: e break in United States Treasury toans was again severe. The 3%s dropped early to par, representing an overnight loss of a point. Treasury ! 45 were down 3, selling around 102. rty 4148 declined 12 point.and were nearly 2 points under Jast Saturday's high price. There was extensive selling of all these issues by both-individuals and institutions. One of the problems facing the Government is.that of obtaining new loans for its promotion propects at a time of great umsestiement in its obligations. High grade rails like Union Pacific 4s..8nd Atchison 4s dropped to the Jow prices of the year. So did prime public. utilities such as Consolidated G Sl:s and American Telephone & Telegraph 5!s. the one going under per.gud the other to about par for the first time this year. There were simpar declines in bonds of relative | rank-in the curb market. e . Speculative issues had extraordinary | advances. For instance, International ‘Telephone & Telegraph 4':s were up about_5 points, and like American & Fi Power 5s, which rose 3 points, have gained 10 points in the last two sessions Western Union 5s and Postal FINANCIAL, | Bolivia 7s'69. WASHINGTON, Grain Market B7 the Assoclated Press. CHICAGO, April 20.—Big new up- turns in in prices today promptly followed official notice that the United States had abandoned the gold stand- ard. Wheat jumped 5% cents a bushel at the opening, and corn, 3% cents. Opening 2%-5% cents up, wheat h:.:r’ :uc;uud widely. -Corn l'}II'M 15-3% advanced, and subsequently Te- ceded somewhat. w Excited buying of huge proportions swept all grain to above any prices heretofore reached this season, and in some cases outdid price records as far back as 1931. Provisions as well as grains advanced sensationally, with lard up 85 cents & hundred Reposts from Washington that President Roose- Douglas to ob- for an Jinflationary rremn acted as a fresh buying stimu- jus and served to rally wheat about a cent a bushel after an extreme setback of 3% cents from initial top quotations. Enormous selling to realize profits was the chief reason that traders as- signed for wheat price downturns which partly wiped out advances. Beneficial rains in Winter crop reglons West and | Southwest were also & factor, although | Nebraska. in | cedented condition resulting from the sudden expansion of business was that the Board of Trade Clearig House and S eu?mmnn houses remained open night.
