STAPSTONE TRACED[ =2k s _ BY ROCK EVOLUTION Geologists Find Pyroxenite, Hs “Grandfather,” Is Valuable Clue. By the Assoclated Press. ITHACA, N. Y., April 20.—The way to prospect for a deposit of or soapstone is to hunt for s “grand- father,” the igneous rock, pyroxenite. This use of evolution in rocks, & new scientific method of prospecting, is timely for the development of natural resources advocated by President Roosevelt. How the soapstone is born as one of & numerous progeny of rocks from volcanic action, and how its “family” leaves telltale earmarks indicating ‘where the valuable talc or -soapstone is likely to be found, is described by J. D. Burfoot, jr., Cornell University geologist. Developed in Virginia. This method was developed for the ‘Virginia Geological , for pros- pecting in that State. Virginia - Semes the largest tone de) in = The treads, table tops and acid and fire re- sisting utensils. Geological study of volcanic action shows that at certain places in the earth’s crust, there were cast up masses of pyroxenite, a rock with a Greek Dame, meaning “stranger to fire.”* The pame is a misnomer, given when it was the ved that pyrozenite was a m“wmch S instead of being ' preduct of the ea s cf | eooling molten roc? .
