A—10 =» PRESIDENT ATTENDS SHOW AT NATIONAL Audience Stands and Cheers Wildly as Roosevelt Party Enters Box. ‘The National Theater became “the President’s theater” last night. For the first time in more than four years a President of the United States at- tended a theater in this city. Pos- sibly not since a former Roosevelt administration has there been such enthi in a theater as marked the entrance last night of President Roosevelt into the presidential box at the National. The audience stood up and cheered wildly—half drowning out “The Star Spangled Banner,” which was played as the President and his my _entered the box. Members of the ident’s party included Mrs. Roose- velt, Mrs. Elsie Roosevelt, Col. and Mrs. Louis Howe and their son, Miss LeHand and John Roosevelt. John Golden’s production, “When Ladies Meet,” presented here by the American Theater Soclety, and one of the most successful comedies produced on Broadway this season, was the play which was thus honored. After the rformance the cast, which includes jeda Inescourt, Selena Royle, Herbert Ravwlinson, Walter Abel and Auguste Aramini, joined with the audience in another tribute to the President. Rapley Plays Host. William Harryman Rapley, veteran theater magnate of this city, played host to the President. Henry Talbert escorted the President to his box. Man- ager S. E. Cochran had seen to it that seats close to the President’s box were unoccupied, so that the President could see the performance with the greatest possible comfort and without having to shake hands with a group of neighbors. ‘The President’s box was the last one in the group on the left as you enter the theater. Since his Harvard days the President has been particularly fond of the thea- ter, including motion pictures—a sound machine having been installed in the ‘White House, where it is used frequently to show comedies. The President has stated he did not wish to see tragedies. “I do not want to be harassed,” he sald recently. ‘Wild Cheers Greet President. ‘When President Roosevelt entered the ‘White House it was assumed he would keep up his interest in the stage. His eldest son, James, at that time an- nounced there was no question but that he would go to the theater when a “good play” came to town. Last night's production, one of Rachel Crothers’ most successful comedies, was known to be such a play. And in spite of the fact that no announcement further than that “Mrs. Roosevelt and a party of friends” would attend the perform- ance, it was surmised that the President would attend also. No audience this season has cheered so wildly as when the President ap- peared. He entered the box on the arm of his son John. Chris Arth led his musicians through a verse of “The Star Spangled Banner,” which, incidentally, Mr. Arth has played many times for previous Preaiden'.s Smiling happily. and acknowledging the |pphuse with his characteristic nod, President Roose- velt seemed as glad to be there as the audience was to have him. During the rformance he was observed to be en- | joying himself thoroughly. OPPOSE MONEY FOR FETE' OCalifornia Legislators May Refuse $9,000 to Entertain Governors. RICH FLORIDIAN FIGHTS WIFE’S ALIMONY PLEA Chandler, in Cross-Complaint, Asks Dissolution of Marriage and Custody of Children. By the Associated Press. TUCSON, Ariz, April 6.—A cross- complaint and answer by John Parker Hale Chandler, wealthy Floridian, was on file here yesterday in the divorce suit brought by his wife.
