Skeele, 65, wife of Dr. Walter F. Skeele, dean of the College of Music of the University of Southern California, and the at- tempted abduction of Miss Isobel Smith, 29, former University of Southern Cali- | fornia student body president. Police records list the woman as Mrs. Luella Pearl Hammer, 27, and the man as W. D. Howard, 32, employed by the woman as handyman at her home, which is located about two blocks from the spot where Mrs. Skeele's captors had directed her husband to deposit the $10,000 in ransom money they had de- manded. Howard sald he arrived here from Kansas City six months ago. The two denied any knowledge of the plot. Detectives said they had uncov- ered enough circumstantial evidence to warrant their temporary detention. Mrs. Skeele was kidnaped last Sunday | night and was released 24 hours lat,er without payment of ransom. Detectives said that despite the pres- ent holding of two suspects, they were continuing to work on the theory that former students of the university may have been involved in both cases.
