C-7 QUEZON MAY SEEK COMPROMISE BILL Foe of Independence Measure Wants Filipino Welfare Safeguarded. By the Associated Press. MANILA, P. I, February 8.—Legi- lative circles today reported Manuel Quezon, powerful President of the Philippine Senate, would be willing to accept the proffered Filipino inde- pendence act provided changes were made by the forthcoming Democratic Congress. But there was no sign from Quezon himself he had altered his op- position to the measure as it now stands. After his arrival in Washington, D. C., for which he now plaps to leave February 25, Quezon hopes o confer with President-elect Roosevelt as well as with congressional leaders and mem- bers of the Independence Mission. A possible hint of his willingness to compromise was given recently when he said if the champions of the act in Was] could convince him “the welfare of the Filipino people would be safeguarded I will have no hesitation |in advocating the law.” Little Chance for New Bill But previously he declared he would “fight to the last, even if alone,” against acceptance of the proffered form of independence. Modifications to meet some of the strongest objections, including lack of a tariff, autonomy during the transition period and the present import limita- tions, might offer a way out of the talemate in which Quezon's allies in the Legislature are aligned with the ex- tremists against members of the mis- sion, some legislators and a large por- (tion of the vocal public opinion in Manila. Recent developments have tended to undermine Quezon’s announced plan. Notable have b:!el;klhume‘:ta of l%:.. tor Tydings an presentative er, who will head the Insular Committees of the next Congress, that there was little chance of a new measure finding congressional approval. Advises Consideration. Quezon was greeted by a crowd esti- mated by officials at from 5,000 to 10.- 000 on his arrival in Iloilo today to participate in inauguration of airplane service between Manila and that port. The crowd greeted him with shouts of “We are with you, Quezon’™ and waved banners advocating rejection of the independence act. : Iloilo, the center of the islands sugar production, is generally consid- ered to be strongly influenced by Man- uel Roxas, Speaker of the insular Mouse and member of the Independence Mis- sion. Quezon_reiterated before the crowd, “Our decision should be reached on after the most mature consideration. | Glass curtains, made by a secret | process in which silk and cotton may | be inclosed between two sheets of glass have been introduced in Europe.
