By the Assoclated Press. SANTA FE, N. Mex, January 24.— La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Assisi, this “City of Holy | Faith,” has recorded an unique event | in its centuries-old history. At the funeral of Archbishop Albert Daeger of Santa Fe, whose death re- sulted from a fall, a service unlike any other before given in the Nation wu' performed. A Pranciscan archbishop’s German-Latin chant of the hvmn “‘Ultima Hora,” the last hour, was sung {by six Franciscan fathers and brothers {Just before the casket was lowered into the crypt, ‘The six stood two on each side fac- ing toward the body of their leader, and one at each end facing outward. | The hymn they chanted was one which : came from the Tyrol to this country years ago, the first record of it appear- ing in Cincinnati in 1844. First to Hoid Office in U. S. Archbishop Daeger was the first of the centuries-old order to regch that high office in the United States, if not in the world. The Franciscan order was founded in the thirteenth century by St. Francis de Assisi, noted Italian, who labored to heal both body and soul, to dress, eat and live simply. The Catholic faith was spread in !the Southwest by the Franciscans. | Spanish conquitadores, pushing their iway North from Mexico City to the i unexplored regions now known as the | Southwest, were followed by members {of the order who spread the faith. I { In the many years the archdiocese |of "Santa Fe existed, it -was governed | by archbishops raised by the usual cus- !tom from secular priests, not members of a religious order. Only one other j archdiocese of the 16 in the United | States has a member of a religious or- der as archbishop now, a Dominican in Cincinnati, Archbishop John T. | Nicholas. Only One Raised Direct. ! Archbishop Daeger was the only | monk raised directly to archbishopric | in the United States, records show. The five archbishops preceding him here were either bishops or vicars apos- { tolic _just before their consec ation as | archbishops. He was the first Fran- ciscan, and the only one, to govern the archdiocese. Heretofore Franciscan bishops, of which there have been two in the {Uniled States, church records here show, have had services by the Fran- | ciscan brothers and fathers. They were | Bishop Michael Egan, the first Bishop | ! of Philadelphia, who died in 1814, and | Bishop Francis Garcia Diego y Moreno, { the first Bishop of Los Angeles, who | died in 1846. These services, however, | did not include all the ceremonies con- i tained in the services here, | While the first bishops in two of America’s greatest cities were once Franciscan monks, only the archdiocese of Santa Fe, cradle of the order in the United States, has had a Pranciscan archbishop, churchmen here say. | Rough, Pimply Skin? CITIZENS PROTEST | REPAIR SHOP CLOSING Trinidad Association Fears Build- ings Would Suffer and 360 Would Lose Jobs. Declaring that the proposed closing of the District Repair Shop would throw approximately 360 persons out of work and perhaps delay repairs on schools and other municipal buildings, the Trinldad Citizens’ Association last night voted that letters of protest against such action be sent the House District ' Committee and the District Commis- sioners. Stressing the numerous hold-ups and robberies recently, the association also adopted a motion asking that the Com- missioners authorize the burning of street lights for an additional half hour in the mornings. The Commissioners’ attention was also called to the use of a vacant lot on Eames place, between Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets north- east, for the abandonment of automo- biles, which created a fire hazard, mem- bers complained. Resolutions asking that the director of traffic establish a pedistrian safety aisle at Fifteenth and H streets north- east, and for the placing of traffic | signal lights at H and Eleventh streets | northeast, were also voted by the ogani- zation. George J. Cleary, president, and Mrs, Francis A. Stephens, secretary, officiated at the meeting held at the president’s home, 1000 I street northeast. The regular meetings will be held at the Wheatley School, Mr. Cleary said, but | failure to notify the school attendant of ghe meeting caused the change last night. ‘The association also indorsed A. Ma- gruder Macdonald, acting ‘coroner, to fill the vacancy created by death of Joseph B. Rogers, coroner, and Dr. | Christopher J. Murphy to take over th office of the deputy coroner, formerl, held by Dr. MacDonald. I NAVY ORDERS I i Lieut. Comdr. John F.
