STAR, 11 AWAIT HOUSE 10 GONTEST VOTES Democrats Number Nine Dis- puting Returns of No- vember Elections. WASHINGTON, By the Associated Pres: Eleven election contests, the largest number in recent years, are awaiting the convening of the next House for settlement. Although the Democrats gained al- most 100 seats in the political some: szult last year, 9 of those disputing the face of the official returns are members of the party that will domi- nate both houses after March 4. In almost every instance the contest charges can be summed up in one word-—fraud—which includes claim of illegal registration, outright stealing of votes, forced poll tax receipts, vote buy- ing and excessive expenditures. The contests will be referred to the three House Elections Committees at | | the first session of the Seventy-third | Congress. and the report of the committees on the cases to the House. Decision to Be Final. That body may or may not follow committee recommendations and its de- cision will be final, for each House is the sole judge of disputes involving its membership. The vote in most of the 11 contests was close, only 78 ballots separating W. P. YWoses & Sons F at 11th Then will follow inquiry | | | D. C, MONDAY, JANUARY 16, 1933 Representative Edward Goss, Repube lcan, in the fifth Connecticut district, and his challenger, Martin Gormley, Democrat. Goss received 42,132 and Gormley 42,064. However, in Mississippl, Representa- tive Russell Elizey got 25,725 ballots and the man who disputes the returns, Loyal G. Reese, Republican, only 386. Reese claims the election was illegal because the ballots did not carry his name, but that of another “alleged Republican.” Representative Harry S. Estep, Re- publican, has not filed a contest against Henry Ellenbogen, Democrat, in the thirty-third Pennsylvania district, but there is a problem in that race since Ellen| n will not be eligible to take the oath of office until this Summe: The Constitution provides that a Rep- resentative must have been a citizen seven years and Ellenbogen has not. A potent influence in the House, Representative Fiorello H. La Guardia, Republican, New York, who has led .many an uprising against his party leaders, must upset the recorded vote if he remains in Congress. The returns showed that 15,227 per- sons voted for La Guardia in the twentieth New York, while 16,447 chose James J. Lanzetta, Tammany Democrat. Woman Disputes Figure, One woman, Anne E. PFelix, Demo- crat, disputes the figures which showed that Michael J. Muldowney, Republican, won by almost 6,000 votes in the thirty- second Pennsylvania district. Records {n the House clerk's office show the other contests are: Twentieth California—C'aude Chand- ler, Democrat, with 43,304 votes, inst Ge_lorge Burnham, Republican, with 43,- Ninth Tlinois—James McAndrews, Democrat, with 36,596, against Repre- sentative Fred A.
