By now the chain gang system has yeceived a blistering treatment from both author and cinema. Mr. Tul- ly's study of methods used is an angry outcry against injustice, and the screen’s imitation of this is not soft - pedaled. To the wails and chantings of colored copatriots you are shown & half-dozen prisoners of one sort and another being wanked up to their salvation—and you are made to be aware of the size of the rope, the size of the neck, the un- certainty of the death (if the man who is to be strung up is too heavy) and of the ready gun which shoots the man if the tree has not done its job_thoroughly. These scenes are by no means pleasant. The hint of such business would be enough. As well done as all this is, you are not grateful for being shown so much, and when the “hero” is tid of his shackles and goes scamping away to a doubtful liberty, you breathe a sigh of relief, as no doubt you are meant to. Otherwise, the story is one of re- venge and misery, in which Pat (“Front Page”) O'Brien bemoans the fact that “he married the wrong woman.” and, catching her with her Jover, kills both of them, and is sent to an angry prison therefor. When he finally escapes, he seeks shelter in a town which has been almost wiped out by a terrible plague—not 8 pretty story as you can see—and there he meets the lovely Gloria Stuart (lovely in spite of her make- up) and finally wanders away with her to what they both hope will be & new home and & new happiness. Present in this play, other than the distinguished author, are Lynn Fon- tanne and Alfred Lunt, who have not been seen here since the equally propitious “Reunion in Vienna.” In- cidentally, Mr. Lunt and Miss Fon- tanne have not appeared the s the scenery and the costuming this week you will appreciate his efforts. A very amusing skit, ably portrayed. ‘The three comics, Raynor, Davis and Hickman, continue to' shine, with honors this week about evenly split among the three. Although several of the gags are rather worn, they nevertheless “go over,” with Ray Parsons and straight men, which they do capably enough. Don and Carita exhibit several rather difficult tangos as a team and Carita offers a specialty that is better than the average of this type dance. R.B. H Clifford Brooke Day In and About the Town. STERDAY was Clifford Brooke day. In the morning some 65 theatric neophites were initiated to the wonders of the mew Clifford Brooke Academy of the Drama, which officially gets under way to- day, and in the evening Mr. Brooke and Mr, and Mrs. Greet were feted at the Arts Club and were also heard in a serious and semi-serious discussion on the theater. ‘Those who are interested in becoming Des- demonas and whatnots Istened with particular devotion to what Mr. Brooke had to say about posture and wordings and about “speaking the speech trippingly on the tongue.” Mr, Brooke's talk was a lively one— full of the “joy” and the trials and the tribulations of the theater, and it was rewarded with long and loud applause. Mr. and Mrs. Greet fol- lowed with shorter discussions of the subject at hand, Mr. Greet dwelling particularly on “his golden days in the theater.” Otto Kruger Signs With Columbia.
