(#)—Mars and Jupiter now are visible in the evening sky, ris- ing almost directly in the east at 11 pam. on the first of the month and at 9 p.m. at the end of the month. They rise four minutes earlier from night to night and will continue to be favorably placed for observation through the Spring and Summer, ‘These two bright planets now are not far apart near the eastern border of the | constellation Leo, whose stars form a | sickle and - triangle. Jupiter, the lower of the two, is brighter than any of the stars. Mars has only one-sixth the hfl;hkctnm of Jupiter, yet 1t is & brilliant object. /As the season advances and the earth swings closer to Mars, this planet will become brighter, until on March 3, the date of che closest approach, it will be half as bright as Jupiter. At its closest approach this year Mars will be 60,000,000 miles away. It will not be a very favorable opposition, though there are reports of proposed attempts to signal the Martians as we pass by in March. It might be a better plan to wait until 1939. Under the most favorable conditions, which occurred in 1924 and will be re- peated in the Autumn of 1939, the earth overtakes Mars at a distance not much greater than 35,000,000 miles. It will be interesting to notice from time to time during the nex six months how Mars is cl its among &hmr-duoh.mg&h anuary it is moving eastward, in the direction of its revolution around the sun. Later in the |month it will halt and will then move westward. By the first of April the red planet will have retreated almost as far as Regulus, in the handle of the sickle of Leo. Thereafter it will advance toward ' the east and in July will pass beyond Leo in Virgo. | Mars is farther from the sun than the earth and therefore revolves less rapidly around it. Once in about two years the faster moving earth gains a lap on Mars. As we pass by this planet it seems to move backward for a time 2gainst the background of the starry scenery. | Jupiter describes a loop also, as any ne can see, if he watches it occasion- ally for the next few months.
