Poster e My & delssonn | é Music at Christmas Time By Alice Eversman. Two thousand years ago, when the world received the good news of the birth of the Savior, it was by means of song that the glory was made known. Music and a star, both of celestial origin, were chosen by the Father to announce this supreme evidence of His bounty. When the angels sang, their song was one of joy and praise and they left with mankind an example to make use of in rejoicing and sorrowings when the heart is full. On that night of His coming, there began a commemora- tion that has never ceased, and always these two elements of the first Christmas, joy and song, are present wherever men acknowledge the supremacy of Christ. The joy of Christmas is the happiness of faith in the One + who was born into this world to the singing of angels, whose praise of Him was linked with a message to the “men of good will.” Music has ever remained the power to bind together for good and it is in singing that Christians truly attain the fellow- ship of men, for whatever the difference of ritual, they sing tomorrow will be as Herald Angels Sin nt Night. Composer after composer throughout the centuries has found his creative impulse in them and striven to apply his own divine gift to giving them earthly form. As years passed and religion became a more familiar part of everyday life, the Christmas story was made to live again as part of the festive season. Fantasy played around the thoughts and feeling of Mary and Joseph and the Child and gave them a homely character that brought them near to the hearts of the people. In the manger songs, these sories were fold, and sung and acted with simple, childlike sincerity. When the first aus- terity of religion later relaxed and worldly gayety and conviv- iality held men's attention, the custom of expressing the Christ- mas spirit of universal good will in song continued and the ;:hr;stmas carolers reminded the people that this was a time or joy. Each country had its own method of establishing this friendly relationship. In Italy the shepherds came down from the mountains with their pipes to sing their “caroli” before the various shrines of the Madonna and be received in kindly fash- ion by townspeople who often joined in the singing. In France, the events of the Nativity were portrayed in drama form with processions and crowds chanting appropriate music until today no celebration of Noel would be complete without its musical program. The simple home-loving peasants of Germany gath- ered round their fires to sing “Wir loben all das Kindelein” with loving faith. In Russia, a lighter star was carried from home to home as the revelers sang and called to those within to join them. England's Yuletide festivities give still a prominent place to the carols that once were so large a part of the miracle plays whereby the Middle Ages solemnized the greatest event of the world. The Christmas festival more than all others called for the highest genius of painters, poets and musicians. The greater their genius, the greater the urge to express the mysteries of religion in art. Nearly all the great composers were profound- religious, feeling that truly their gifts were divine, and they strove to choose from the melodies they heard in their inner self, the ones most fitting to the portrayal of the sublime events. Bach, who inscribed all his compositions “To the glory of God alone,” found constant inspiriation in the “Magnificate” and in his Christmas oratorio he expressed his deep religious feeling. Haendel has immortalized the old Italian shepherds’ Christmas carol in the contralto aria from “The Messiah,” “He Shall Feed His Flocks,” and it is said that when he heard the first performance of his oratorio, he exclaimed: “I did think 1 saw God Himself.” Beethoven’s humble dependance on divine help is well known. ganist anu director.
