A—10 CATHEDRAL SERVICE FOR HOLY NATIVITY Bishop Freeman Announces Special Program for Tomorrow. Christmas day will be celebrated at Washington Cathedral with special services and music commemorating the * holy nativity, according to an an- nouncement made today by Bishop James Edward Freeman. There will be celebrations of the holy communion in the crypt chapels at 7:30 and 9:30, followed by & festival service at 10:30 o'clock in the great choir, with Bishop Freeman delivering the sermon The Cathedral choir of men and boys. under the direction of Edgar Priest, will ! 8ing. Choral evensong_will be conducted by Dr. William L. DeVries, canon pre- centor of the Cathedral, beginning at 4 o'clock in the great choir, with & pro- gram of popular carols interspersed with familiar Christmas hymns, in which the congregation will be invited to join. A Teature of the evensong service will be the singing for the first time of a new Christmas carol, “Upon the Sol- emn Midnight Hour,” written by Bishop Freeman and set to music by Stanley R. Avery. For the first time in nearly 10 years | the annual carol service from the Ca- | thedral will not be broadcast over the | radio. Preparations are being made to welcome unusually large congregations at the services. There will be oppor- tunity for out-of-town visitors to make a pilgrimage through the Cathedral and the crypt chapels immediately follow- ing the 10:30 am. and 4 o'clock serv- ices. All those interested in partici- pating are requested to assemble in the Chapel of St. John in the south, «hoir aisle at approximately 12:15 and $§:30 pm. Following a custom of 20 years, the members of the boy choir will render evensong at 4 o'clock on Christmas eve m the Bethlehem Chapel of the Holy Nativity. ‘UNCHANGING CHRIST’ IS CHRISTMAS TOPIC Dr. A. J. McCartney’s Sermon to Be Preceded by Special Pro- gram of Carols. “The Changing World and the Un- changing Christ” will be the topic of a brief sermon with which Dr. A. J. McCartney will conclude the service of praise in celebration of the birth of our Lord at the Covenant-First Pres- byterian Church tomorrow morning. Christmas carols sung by the quarte: will precede the hour of service and those desiring to hear these carols are invited to come at 10 minutes before 11 o'clock. The decorations for the church are the gift of Mrs. Thomas N. McLaugh- lin, who has established an endowment for this purpose to be carried on from year to year in memory of her family. On New Year day, Dr. McCartney announces his theme as “The Story of the Lost Prisoner.” As New Year day falls on Sunday the customary gath- ering of the congregation which for 40 years has taken place on New Year morning will be held Thursday eve- ning instead. General participation upon the part of those present is invited. YULETIDE PAGEANT WILL BE PRESENTED Special Music at Calvary Baptist Church Also Arranged for Evening Service. Rev. W. S. Abernethy, pastor of Cal- vary Baptist Church, will preach to- morrow morning on “The Gift Un- speakable.” At the evening service a pageant, “The Christmas Pageant of the Holy Grail,” will be given, under the direction of Miss Winifred E.
