A8 THE - SUNDAY STAR, COMMING ISSUES APPEAL ON SEALS Drive Is $28,000 Behind Goal of $50,000, With Six Days Left Till Christmas. With the sale of Christmas seals running far behind schedule, Dr. Hugh | S. Cumming, surgeon general, Public Health Service, last night issued an ap- campaign of the Washington Tuber- culosis _Association, of which he is a director, The service of the association, he said, is worthy of the confidence and | support of all citizens. It depends for its funds upon the annual sale of seals. With only six more shopping days be- fore Christmas, it was announced last night, the local sale is short by $28,000 of the $50,000 goal. Children Examined Free. In asking for support of the associ- || ation, Dr. Cumming said: “I know that during the past year several thousand children of Washing- ton who were known to be living in homes where open cases of tuberculosis existed have received a free examina- tion by expert diagnosticians at the free clinic maintained by the association with the official co-operation of the ||| Health Department of the city, includ- ing X-ray of the chest. Also that trained health workers employed by our society have visited these homes to give instruction as to the protection of the children from further exposure and as 15 the care of the sick. This clinic, at 512 I street, but soon to be removed to better quarters with the Health De- partment, at Fourth and C streets, is |’ open from 9 to 12 every Monday and Friday. ~I1 have often visited the Children’s Health Camp, operated during the Sum- mer months by our association, which gives proper care for little children suffering from tuberculosis infection i with plenty of good food and safe milk, + adequate rest and bodily exposure to air | and sunshine. And, finally, T know that i the association is constantly doing edu- ) cational work by means of newspaper publicity, posters, lectures and free health literature telling the public how o prevent the development and the spread of tuberculosis in the com-| munity and how best to care for those afflicted with this communicable, but not hereditary, disease. Financed by Sale. “All of these services are financed by the annual sale of Christmas Seals. with the full understanding and agreement of the Community Chest. I wish, there- fore, to voice the hope that all who can do so will buy and use our little life- saving stamps, sold at 1 cent each everywhere.” § Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, is to deliver & radio address tomorrow morning at 9:15 from Station WJSV on “Alley Housing and Its Relation to Tuberculosis.” MORE GIFTS ARE NEEDED FOR CHRISTMAS PARTY Several thousand boys and girls from homes in Washington that Santa Slaus does not always visit are waiting with all the expectancy of cherished hopes Jor the annual Christmas party of the Central Union Mission next Saturday morning at the Fox Theater. Santa Claus, with a loaded pack, has promised to be on hand punctually at 9:30 o'clock. With hard times presenting unusual demands this Christmas, the workers at the mission were worrying yesterday ‘because nearly 100 of the bright colored \cretonne bags have not yet been filled (with toys, candies and warm things to wear on cold nights. Christmas is only a week away, Supt. John S. Bennett ‘appealed to friends of the mission over \Station WOL last night, and unless the ags are filled, some children may be med to disappointment.
