Thornton W. Burgess. BEDTIME STORIES 7% Buzztail Decides to Retire. ‘Who knows when he's well off is wise, Content whatever may arise. —Old Mother Nature. UZZTAIL the Rattlesnake had had a very good Summer. Not once to protect himself had he had to use that deadly poison which makes him so greatly feared by all his neighbors. He had | been left severely alone, and this was ®s he wanted it. He isn't socially in- 1 ] many times to himself. “I'm not look- ing for trouble. I don't want trouble. 1 play fair, absolutely fair. I give ample warning and that is all I can do. Enough to eat and plenty of warm sunshine is all T ask.” | He had had both, and so the long Summer had passed. With the coming| of the cool days of Autumn Buzztail had grown more and more sluggich and | had begun to think of Winter quarters where he wculd sleep the Winter away safe and comfortably. So by degrees he | had made his way to the ledges. He| knew those ledges as did no others save | of his own kind. He knew all the nar- | row, winding little pa:sages that led far down where Jack PFrost could not poesi- bly reach. But having reached the ledges, he was nct quite ready to retire. | He would crawl in at night, but on days | when jolly, bright Mr. Sun was shining | he would crawl out again for another | sun bath on the rocks. That had been what he was doing when he had the adventure with Buster | Bear and Lightfoot the Deer. "It is! still too warm to retire for the Wint he had thought as he sunned himself | that day. “It will be a long time that | I will not have a chance for a :un bath, | so I might as weil meke the most of the opportunities I do have.” | When Buster Bear had come shuf- | fling alcng Buzztail premptly rattled a | | warning, He wasn't afraid of Buster, | | for he knew that Buster would leave | WHEN BUSTER BEAR HAD COME him alone. Since the frog’s body is very moist, it will conduct an electric current yery well. INTER beauties are hard to see—for those simple tastes, at least, that like their beauty to be prettiness or sheer showy, expensive like cannon-ball chrysanthe- mums in a florist’s windows. But it is there, nevertheless, in woods, in the| open flelds and even in that most cheer- J | less of places in Winter, a marsh, or a | stream ‘bank. There is nothing that | would so ravish the soul of a Japanese artist as a few stalks of our wool-grass, with its delicate clouds of brown fleece | and graceful stems. Or cotion-grass, | which is more beautiful still, and of a | paler brown or even, sometimes, white | as a snowball. To find it, however, you | must visit the magnolia bogs of Prince Georges Ccun{' vland. Together these two make a Winter bouquet of the utmost charm. Like immortelles, they | will last for weeks in the house, even without water, without feeding, since, of | course, they are not i flower but, in their own pecullar way, in fruit, like cattails. ‘Wool grass and cotton grass are not, of course, grasses at all, but sedges. The sedge family bristles with difficulties for | the amateur nature lover when he comes to distinguish between the different va- rieties, but even a school child can be taught the difference between sedges and grasses. Grasses, as a rule, have round, hol- low stems; sedges, as & rule, have square stems that are solid or at least filled with spongy pith. And, for the most part. sedges grow in water or wet places, grasses in terta firma. There are ex- ceptions, but the rule holds well enough to make a beginning of wisdom. To this Winter bouquet you can add am pods that grow so plentifully | pine weods and the thickets of | and river-bank birch beside the uns and brooks of both Virginia | rvland. They have loosed their | 3 ,-and the three silvery cham- | bers of the pods stand open, frail and symmetrical. For color's sake I would add a few of the ever limber and green twigs of spicebush with their handsome | ccarlet berries. Or a few heads of the | dwarf or aromatic sumac, Wwith its hearty red-velvet coats around its fruits, | and, while you are exploring the swamps | of Prince Georges County for the rare cotton grass, pluck a few sprigs of bay- | berry, just to add the touch of a hand- | | 4 some gray. The beauty of this Winter bouquet | lies in the fact that not only did it not cost anything, but it is made up of | plants which even the most conscien- | tious can pick with a light heart. The | conservationists do not need to entreat | | us to spare these plants as they do the | sadly per | and’ bittersweet. These are not more | — beautiful than the plants of my Winter | bouquet; they are merely “fashionable.” | Too many people who roam the woods | in search of Winter beauties do not | know there is anything to find but| holly and mistletoe and bmerswet, Jelly Roll.
