Trading in the share list was as dull as yesterday, but prices were main- tained. The commodity movement was irregular. Cotton wa: down fractionally and low following yesterday's similar break. Weak at Two Points. There were only two points of weak- ness in stocks. One was international business machines, where the market expressed disappointment that no year- end stock dividend was declared, and the other American Tobacco, for the selling of which only the competition of the low-priced cigarette was sug- gested. Sterling exchange opened on this side at $3.15', after having sold in London at $3.15 prior to the start of business here. These were new lows for the British currency for all time. From the opening price there was a brief rally here to $3.16'' and then another break, this time carrying the quotation down to $3.14%;, off 44 cents from the close on Monday. ‘There was no new explanation of the acute weakness. The selling was not particularly heavy. case of no one who had dollars caring to exchange.them for sterling. That process cannot go on forever, but for the moment there is nothing to stop it and opinion continued bearish in the extreme—providing always, of course, that no concession is made on the debt payments due December 15. In the face®of this renewed decline in sterling, stocks gave an extrordinarily good account of themselves. Trading was very light, but during the morning net changes were on the side of ad- vance, all of them small, but indicative of the composure with which the mar- ket viewed the situation. Short cover- ing came into Coca Cola, lifting the price over a point; American Telephone rallied fractionally Atchisen made minor recoveries and so on throughout the list. Liquidity Shown.
