SO 8. NEDED INCHET CAVPACH Only 24 -Hours Remain in Which to Raise Quota in Charity Drive. irtued From Pirst Page) 86 hours is that if you don't fill up the calendar, cross off those black days of | next Fall, people are going to be hungry and in distress in Weshington, and the | Community Chest will have no funds to help them. You can, if you will, put this campaign over. Thousands Haven't Given. “There remain in Washington thou- sands and thousands of people who have not yet given. The only way we can get these subscriptions is for you to con- tinue your dedication of yourselves to urageous, not discour- n the back and say fine job. You have 1 am proud of you Come to the ting tomorrow night and report your success.” Rabbi Abram Simon of the Washing- ton Hebrew Congregation was the prin- eipal speaker at today’s meeting. He called upon the workers to emu- late Joshua, who commanded the moon to stand still. “Joshua won the battle,” you have done done a fine job, still, but because in those two or three hours were packed six or seven hours of energy. The day appeared longer. I am sure that you will so act that in the | few hours that are left you will put | twice the amount of enthusiasm and twice the amount of energy and it will sppear as if you have done a dozen hours of work when in reslity you will only have worked six. “T urge that you allow no type of disappointment to discourage you. Do} not indicate by word or expression that[ you are discouraged. Success is its own contagion.. Enthusiasm is its own in- fection.” Large Gifts Reported. the large gifts reported today :ngsw.soo contribution of Wood- & Lothrop, $6,500 from Mr. and . Those who will not have completed their work he advised to stick on the job until they are finished. Honor guests at today’s meeting in- | cluded Ethel Barrymore, Mrs. Duncan ! Skinner, Rear Admiral H. V. Butler and Julius Garfinckel. “Must Not Fail.” On the amount of work done by Chest solicitors during these last two days of | the campaign depends the success or failure of the drive, Chairman Noyes said today. “If you work with every | nerve strained,” he told them, “you can ! and will do it. But if you leave it to some one else to do, and become dis- | couraged, the campaign will fail. It must not fail.” Every available worker was out early this morning, after carrying the cam- paign into the homes and offices of the city until a late hour yesterday. Con- ferences were held by the leaders of all groups participating in the campaign following yesterday’s report meeting at the Willard Hotel, and new plans of campaigning were mapped out to meet the emergency faced by the campaign. The reserves in every unit were called forth to help sustain the weary workers who for more than a week now have trudged the streets, going from door 10 door, from office to office, combing up | the pennies which are necessary if | ‘Washington is to meet its obligation it owes to its unfortunate. The Government Unii, in which little work could be done over the week end, was lagging far behind, with yesterday's yepert showing only $318,022.53 of the nearly $1,000000 quota assigned thisj group. Better things of this unit were | expected with today's report. Others Progressing Well. The other units were reported pro-| gressing well and likely to reach or even | surpass their quotas when the final re- ports are in, but overtime work cn the En of every worker in these units will required, campaign officials said.
