Zhe only explang.on given was the likeiihood that there would be no post- mzmem cf the foreign debt payment. prospects of this appeared to have frightened some weak holders of the bonds and to have caused some dealer selling. Strengthened by Loan. LLW appr: more o ear.ier strengih to the March maturity of 4z, after they had declined 2 points | on a report that the loan might be held | up -through some techn cality. It 1s significant that the longer issues of the rcad have not responded to the rise in the 4%s and were off again today, espe- clally the refunding 6s, which sold under 50. Early heaviness was exhibited by a number of the junior raflroad bonds, with a point decline in Alleghany Cor- poration 5s of 1850. On the other hand the better grade of railroed issues like Atchison General 4s, Norihern Pacific ! 4s and Union Peeifiz 45 edvanced from 1, to & p The high- grade securitics is Limiied only by the supply. Specialists in railroad equip- ment certificates state that the demand for short maturities is stronger than it has been in some time and that few offerings are coming into sight. The best grade public utilities are being steadily accumulated by institutions and insurance companies at prices that average close to the highest of the year. Bearish Attitude Holds. American & Foreign Power §s were weak in sympathy with the generally bearish™ attitude toward Electric Bond & Share securities. American Metal 5148 rose 2 points on small transactions. The demand for high-grade short-term issues was illustrated in General Motors Acceptance 6s, which sold again today at 103%, for the five-year maturity. Bonds of petroleum companfes have been gaining in of investors since statements of earnings have im- proved. Pan-American Petroleum 6s advanced a point. In the foreign list Italian govern- ment 7s advanced early nearly & {soln! and then lost the gain. Germen loans were easler, as were those of the French government. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, November 16.—After opening lower the Curb Exchange firmed today around midday, but trad- ing remained light. Electric Bond & Share at one time was off 2 points, but later recovered partially. Cities Service was off & shade, while Standard Oil of Indiana was unchanged. In sharp contrast to cther active utilities was the spurt of Niagara-Hudson Power. News was-mixed. Steel operations declined. Electric power output showed the seme rate cf rececsion as a week ago. Retail trade reports were spotty. Overseas markets were hesitant. Dividend Action Awaited. While the Street awaited the out- come of the Electric Bond & Share dividend meeting after the close of the market today, the common shares were offered freely during the first two hours. At that time the stock was quoted at less than one-half its peak price of less than two months ago. Meanwhile, the financial district was inclined to believe that a revision or omission of the Electric Power & Light preferred payments coyld be looked for when directors meet November 23. United Gas preferred, the halving of | whose dividend payment started the questioning of the safety of Electric Bond & Share common disbursements, {moved slightly lower. Niagara-Hudson Power common advanced in the fore- noon as the Street heard that directors on November 21 would declare the regular dividend. New England Power & Light preferred also moved ahead. Textile Shares Irregular. Textile shares moved frregularly. ‘Tubize Chatillon A moved up more than 2 points as Celanese Corporation of America preferred lost that amount. Celanese first preferred shares opened higher. Standard Ofl of Ohio common and preferred were both a shade higher in early trading in contrast to the easiness of other petroleum issues as a result of increased crude production during the last week. Copper shares hardened, but zinc and gold shares were virtually | unchanged. Federated metal was up a point. Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea on its first: few trades cancelled half the gain of the preceding session, but food shares generally lagged. (Copyright, 1932.) NEW YORK, November 16.—The Cit- les Service Co. yesterday announced ar- rangements had been completed for the payment at maturity of $35,000,000 5 ser cent secured gold hotes of the Toledo The company stated that the only new financing so far announced in con- nection with the maturing notes was a new issue by the Toledo Edison Co. of $27,000,000 first mortgage gold bonds, 5 per cent series, due 1962, which was publicly offered today through a bank- ing group headed by the Chase Harris Forbes Corporation and was quickly oversubscribed at 951 and interest to yield 5.30 per cent. With the exception of the issue due December 1, the Cities Service organi- zation explained that there are no other funded debt maturities prior to 1937 ag- gregating more than $2,000,000 in any year. The proceeds from the sale of the new Toledo Edison bonds, it was said, will be used principally in the retire- ment of all presently outstanding bonds secured by m on the property ortgages % |of that company. It was added, how- ever, that refunding was for the primary purpose of making the new bonds legal for investment savings banks and trust funds in New York, Massachu- setts, Connecticut and certain other States. Details were not announced as to plans for providing the adidtional funds for the approaching maturity above the amount available for that purpose out of the new issue of Toledo Edison bonds. It was stated, however, that arrange- ments made as a resuit of all agree- ments in connection with this financing 14 |are such that the total current Habili- ties of the Cities Service Co. and all its subsidiaries will be increased by less than $2,000,000 due in 1933. 1 Buen Al Pr Tl E Co 6s B '51 1 Chile Mty Bk 8s '3i 1Danish Con stax |58 xw—_Without warrani n—New. wi—When issued. —_——— 31, | yesterday PHILADELPHIA RUBBER PLANT IS PURCHASED AKRON, Ohio, November 18 (#).— Master Tire & Rubber Corporation to- day announced acquisition of plant and assets of the Quaker City Rubber Co. of Philadelphia.
