MOUNTAINBUILDING IS SEEN IN QUAKES Uu. S. chentlsts Explain Greece and Chalcidice Penin-! sula Lie in Tremor Belt. By:the Associated Press. ‘The earthquakes jarring Greece are incident in nature’s mountain- program in that part of the world. This view was expressed today by Government scientists, who explained that fault lines, or fractures in the earth’s crust, run northwest and south- east through the Chalcidice Peninsula, where the " quakes are uccurrln¥ Earthquakes usually are felt along fault lines, because sections of the crust *uug' along these lines when a slowly- ~up strain inside the earth sud- denly breaks loose. Lies in Quake Beit. Greece, these scientisis say, the great earthquake belt that 1uns all the way from the East Indles to the Alps by way of the Himalaya Mountains and the Mediterranean Basin. Another such belt partially encircles the Iacific Ocean. These belts are centers of the earthquake action. Rising and sinkirg of sections of the earth’s crust causes earthquakes, be- cause the movement takes place in a series of ‘jumps.” Earthquakes are the jarring that results. Scientists explain that stresses and strains gradually are built up inside the earth, as when a man bends a stick across his knee in an effort to break it. | When the strain is great enough the ! stick breaks—in the earth there is breaking or shifting of rocks and a re- sulting earthquake. Weight of Earth Shifts. The rising and sinking of which earthquakes are symptoms are believed | to take place over hundreds of thou- ' sands and millicns of years. Increased ‘weight of sediments washed down onto | low-lying sections pushes these parts of the earth's crust downward, while other sections, lightened by loss of the sedi- ments, gradually rise. Land also sank under weight of the glaciers in the ice age, then rose again as the ice melted. ‘There is little chance that the Chal: cidice Peninsula will sink into the sea, say Government scientists, unless it is low land only a foot or two above sea level. Large sections of land do not rise or sink far during an earthquake. In the earthquake of 1811 sections of Ten- nmessee, Missouri and Arkansas sank from 5 to 15 feet, but there is no record of large areas sinking into the sea. Long duration of the Grecian earth- quake is not unusual, as shocks have | been known to continue for as much as & year. lies in i -— READING SUPPLEMENTAL TO CONCERTS IS PLANNED Libraries to Have Biographies Available on Authors of National Symphony Music. By the Associated Press. ‘TOLEDO, Ohlo, October 4.—A night club orchestra which sent its hottest numbers resounding through the state- ly downtown first Westminster Presby- terian Church Sunday night probably will perform again next Sunday night, Dr. Elwood Rowsey, pastor of the church, said yesterday. Some church members indicated they were shocked when the orchestra, sax- ophones lnd did its snapplest with “Boop, Boop-a-Docp,” “Let’s Have a Party,” “Pent House” and the rest of its repertroire. But they were shocked still more when they found out the or- chestra has a regular job at a down- town night club. However, Dr. Rowsey, who, during the week. is welfare director in Mayor A. G. Thacker's cabinet, declared he had made it plain that members of his congregation who do not care for jazz services can stay at home Sunday nights. He drew a packed house Sunday night. He explained that he planned his evening program to catch downtown crowds looking for entertainment: Besides the orchestra numbers, the minister reviewed a book. Other Sun- day nights, he said, he sometimes dis- cusses an editorial or conducts a ques- tion and answer forum. ‘Twelve regular members of the church choir refused to take their places Sunday night when they learned the orchestra was on the program.
