SOENTST GHANTS HEREDITY TRATS Average American’s Family Tree Is Studied by Car- negie Researcher. BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE. NEW YORK, October 4 (#).—Re- versing the usual scientific rule, the heredity tree of one Mr. Average American is published by the Eugenics Research Association. Ordinarily, scientific heredity studies have been confined to unusual families, possessing - ejther great criminals, great stupidity or unusual talent. These humbler Americans’ heredity traits are the product of years of study | by Morris Steggerda, of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Studies Own Relatives. ‘The “data,” he says, are collected | from among his own relatives, and are “of a not unusual family.” ‘There are 757 individuals spread through four generations. Most of them are of “pure Dutch stock” and live within a radius of 25 miles of each other. Yet the differences are marked. There are four main groups. In one of these “most of the individuals are characteristically humorous.” other branch they are * erous.” In a third branch “craftsmanship, such as hand carving, cabinet making, bricklaying and interior decorating have been very much in evidence for at least four generations.” There are 88 family groupings which Dr. Steggerda calls fraternities. In one of these nearly all the individuals died of tuberculosis. In another, nine children died in infancy, and one of the four which lived weighed only 112 pounds at birth. | In the humor-loving branch of the family many individuals died of can- cer, although there is no connectior of course, between their hereditary | light-heartedness and the disease. Among all these generations there have been only two pairs of twins, and both of these were in the same branch | e Reaso People buy The PALAIS ROYAL 1.35 Cast Iron Dutch Oven, 79¢ Large, extra deep— with self-basting cover. 89¢ Perfect siz 195 Wear-Ever Aluminum Pan Tea Pots, Imported 1.98 Royal Carpet 1.29 Fol Sweeper, 1.39 Mahogany finished metal case; bristle brush. you best. The general biological rule for the world at large is for female births to exceed males. In this family the average weight of babies at birth declined from 85 in the first generation to 7.9 in the sec- ond. Dr. Steggerda says the difference in weight is “probably insignificant.” —_—e OCTUGBER 4, Democrats Plan Card Party.
