Trading was active. The opening reflected rises in stocks and higher prices for wheat and cot- ton, but selling came into the bond market when stocks reacted. For the most part, however, small gains ap- pearing at the opening were partially eld. In the speculative railroad group a firm tone prevailed for Erie refunding 5s, Missouri Pacific 5s, Nickel Plate, 41:s, Chicago & Northwestern 434s and St. Paul 5s. Nickel Plate 6s lost an initial gain of a point. The Inter- state Commerce Commission an- nounced that it had modified its ulti- matum to the Nickel Plate. The Nickel Plate had been ordered to secure the consent of most of the hold- ers of $20,000.000 6 per cent notes which mature October 1 to a plan to pay 25 per cent in cash and extend the balance for three years. The penalty was that the I. C. C. would not authorize the Re- construction Finance Corporation to lend the Nickel Plate $5.000.000 to make | the cash payment. The road obtained the consent of only a small group of Tnote holders in the time elapsed since the offer was made, so the I. C. C. modi- fled its request to permit the R. F. to make funds available for October % interest. It is now believed that the note- holders will have to approve a tempor- ary extension until the plan can be worked out. High-grade railroad bonds continued firm, as did utilities such as American Telephone 5s and Consolidated Gas 5'58 and industrials of the best grade, like Standard Oil of New York 4}s, Stand- ard of New Jersey 5s and General Pe- troleum 5s. Junior industrials and utilities were soft, though not inclined to get far under Saturday’s closing prices. Small losses occurred in Hudson Coal 5s, Internationa! Telephone 4!5s, American & Foreign Power 5s and Western Union 5s. Bonds were firm and active at the opening. Gains ranging from fractions to a point occurred in speculative railroad issues such as Baltimore & Ohio 4!5s, Erie refunding 5s and Missouri-Pacific 55, Nickel Plate 6s and in seasoned de- scriptions like Great Northern 7s and New York Central debenture 4s. In- dustrials and utilities were also strong, the most active being Vanadium Cor- poration 5s, National Dairy Products 5';, International Telephone 5s and Western Union 5s. Cities Service moved narrowly. Standard Oil of Indiana fractionally receded. Trade news was favorable. many parts of the country came reports of a retall buying rush on s-mw. Steel operations expanded. Car - ings continued upward. Several size- able orders were placed for raw ma- terials, a 4,000,000-pound copper pur- chase by Westinghouse Electrical & Manufacturing Co. being noteworthy.
