Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 23.—Bonds were strong today in active trading. The lead was taken by railroad obliga- tions of the second and third grades, with advances ranging from 1 to 4 points. Industrials and junior utility ssues rose sharply. High-grade cor- poration issues were firm. United States Government long-term bonds gainbd narrowly. In the foreign list there was a good sprinkling of frac- al advances. “rish news concerning the rail- yo-ds ‘~cluding the threat of another Jabor wage dispute and the refusal of c-:ain lcans by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, was ignored and emrhasis placed on_estimates of the weekly car-loading figures, which are expected to show the best gain of the year. BY JOHN A. CRONE. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 23 —Strong at the outset today, the Curb Exchange increased its initial gains. Trading, however, was much slower than on ‘Thursday. Electric Bond & Share near midday was up about 3 points. American Gas & Electric was up about 2 points. Cities Service was virtually unchanged. Standard Oil of Indiana was a shsde' lower. Aside from encouraging weekly bank- Ing statistics, such as the greater than seasonal contraction in currency circu- lation, the rise of gold reserves and the drop in brokers’ loans, there was little overnight news of financial importance. Moving picture theaters reported higher box office receipts. Automobile produc- tion in September, for the first time since 1925, was higher than in August, thereby going contrary to seasonal trends. Columbia Pictures opened lower, though later it steadied. Earnings for the fiscal year will top $3 a share. Bet- ter grade films are boosting local box office receipts, which accounts for the recent activity in such shares. BANKING SITUATION GREATLY IMPROVED Fail-ures Have Been Sharply Reduced in Recent Weeks. Bond Gain Helps. BY DR. MAX WINKLER. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 23.—Onme of | the most encouraging developments within recent weeks is the marked de- cline in bank failures in the United | States, C ‘The number of closings in August { has dropped more than 35 per cent be- low July and almost 44 per cent below | ;Junc figures. 1931, last month’s failures represent a Compared with August, shrinkage of about 46 per cent. Improvemen‘ in the banking situa- tion is directly traceable to the appre ciation in the securities market, hotably bonds, which made it possible for financial institutions to dispose of is- sues long dormant, thereby strengthen- |ing very materially their pesitions. It is not unlikely that one of the main reasons for organizing the $100,- 000,000 securities company was to bring about an advance in the so-called scc- ondary bond market, which was prac- tically the sine qua non to arrest steadilv increasing bank failures. Although the radio trade show here has attracted good business from retailers, radio manufacturing shares lagged. Air shares as a group acted somewhat tired after their recent stimulus from the big bookings of foreign orders for various types of planes. It was the oil securities, however, that showed the most informly heavy and irregular tendency in an otherwise firm market during the first three hours. In an attempt to reduce gasoline in- ventories, retail prices in this section have been lowered again. This price revision will result in smaller earnings for the fourth quarter.
