Mississippl River Power preferred made the best showing in public utility senior shares and Celanese prior pre- ferred led the textiles upward, Pepperell Manufacturing was active. National Sugar Refining strengthened. Alabama Power $7 preferred and Ap- palachian Electric Power $7 preferred registered sizeable gains near the close as United States Playing Card pointed upward. Undaunted by the Roosevelt speech on public utilities, traders bid up that group of shares in the forenoon, forcing shorts to cover. The Street took the view that some management, invest- ment and holding companies needed more regulation than at present and in that sense accepted the Democratic candidate’s speech. In the upswing of the power and light companies outstanding movers were Assoclated Gas & Electric pre- ferred, American Light & Traction, *| Eastern States Power B, Utilities Power & Light B and United States Electric with warrants. Paris cables indicating the signature of an international agreement between American, British and Dutch ol execu- tives, designed to improve the export market, bettered Gulf Oil Corporation. Encouraging reports of greater than seasonal demand for gasoline helped Pure Oil preferred, Standard Oil of Kentucky and Standard Ol of Ohio. Ohio Brass passed its preferred pay- ment and North & Judd Manufacturing reduced its disbursement from 37!, to 25 cents quarterly, but these were the only unfavorable dividend revisions.
