A—10 xx¥ INTERESTINSTO “MARKET EXPANDS *Brokers’ Offices Are Crowded as Ticker Records Ad- vance in Prices. BY EDWARD C. STONE. 3 Almost like magic the local New York i Stock Exchange offices were crowded to % the doors again today after the 10-day ;‘lull in the market. Following last gnight's more favorable closing, both speculators and investors turned out to see what might happen today. They witnessed a market that spread en- . couragement very generously around the customers’ rooms. Keen interest in stocks and bonds, \ which had been running high for the ‘past two months, dwindled a bit last week, starting the day before the Maine election. The market went lower for *several days, but New York -economists and market writers hastened to state that the Maine election was not the real cause, as the long advance had brought about weakness in the technical position before the voting in the Pine Tree State took place. They added that both candidates were anxious to help the Nation's business in every way possible and that in their opinion the campalgn should have no permanent effect on gtocks, no matter how it ends. Today interest in securities had more than doubled in the broker offices, in business h restaurants and clubs. tionally, there are two sct market foilowers. One set is try- ing to get in at the bottom and the other element is watching every move in order to get money free that is now tied up. Some who have funds tied up axe also attempting to average on their holdings. One broker said today that the revived interest in the market is little less than astonishing. Local Exchange More Active ading on the Washington Stock !:x?han;eg seemed to catch the spirit of the New York Exchange today and business was more active than it has been in several sessions. The local market opened with Wash- ington Railway & Electric 4s selling at 87.n a $1,000 transaction. The final sale of the day was in the same issue, $1.000 moving at 87ls. Washington Gas Light 5s came out| in a $500 sale at 103';. Two sales in Washington Gas 6s, series A were also | recorded, $1.000 selling at 9935 and | $500 at 99'5. NEW YORK, September 21.—Stocks swept upward today in a movement which took in all groups and with gains that ran for the leaders to 6. 7. 8 and 9 points. In one session the mar- ket recovered more than half the loss sustained during the recent rea The buying was insistent all day and rearly s0. The bear element vwas put to com- plete rout, covering as best they could After so violent an advance it would I.Je x;i:s(inaé)]r to expect realizing and setback, but nothing of that vi m-;r’fm up to the end. e e rise in stocks was so all-inclusiv that it was difficult to pick out features, Two that may be mentioned were J. I. Case, at one time up 9 points, and American Telephone, which just below 116 was up almost 8 points and mo than 10 points above yesterday's lo American Can, directors of which are s00n to meet for dividend action and which had been heavily sold for short account. ran up over 8 points. Thers ;aa‘? urgent demand for the rails all Volume ran close to 4,000.000 shares quarter of an hour ites behind tuying and the rapid ad- characterized the early trading surprised even the market's friends. Its enemies. meaning the shorts, were still more put to it for an explana~ tion. Various theories were advanced to explain the resumption of the upward movement and none of them was en= tirely convincing. One conclusion, how- ever, was justified. The stock market is no longer concerned about the out- come of the natlonal election. No mat- ter who is successful, it believes thag business recovery will go on just the same. Meanwhile, there was a technical situation which proved hazardous in the extreme to operators for the decline, They had warning in the number of stocks which were loaning at premium last night, including Allied Chemical American Can and United States Steel preferred. Selling in all of these during the recent reaction had been predomin- antly for short account. That would have been all right for the sellers if it had brought about any liquidation, but it did not. The present real holders of stocks were not to be frightened and the short sellers were left without a supply from which to retire their con- tracts A striking instance of this condition was United States Steel preferred. That one-time premier investment had been sold on a requestioning of the ¥ of the dividend. It sold yester- day at 68, off over 20 points from the high of the recovery. This morning, when it was plain the market had turned. a quotation of 73 bid. offered at 84 was printed on the tape and after three or four advertisements a sale was effected at 76, with a further gain thereafter. vances PARIS BOURSE PRICES.
