FIN RAIL BONDS LEAD INSTRONG MARKET Speculative Carrier Issues Show 2 to 5 Point Advances. Utilities Well Bought. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, September 16—Rail- road bonds were the strongest feature of a market that exhibited firmness in every department today. Trading was moderately active. At the opening there was no impor- tant accumulation of orders on either side of the market and it was some time before active trading was under way. Continental markets had marked time awaiting Wall Street's opening. Yet when the upturn started in the junior railroad list a good portion of the buying came from European centers. The reiteration of the determination of the Railroad Credit Corporation not to permit any more receiverships was one reason for the buying. Another was the expectation that the weekly car- loading figures on Saturday will show a substantial increase, allowing for the Labor dayv holiday. Gains in the more speculative carrier bonds ranged from 2 to 5 points, with the largest in Southern Railway 648, Southern Pacific 4!2s, Rock Island A 4 and Missouri-Pacific 5s. Sharp advances occurred in Alleghany Cor- poration 5s, Baltimore & Ohio 4'.s, Chesapcake Corporation 55, Chicago & Northwestern 434s, Rock Island refund- ing 4s, Tllinois Central 4%s, New York Central 4!,s and refunding 5s. Nickel Flate 6s, Northern Pacific 6s, Western Maryland 4s and St. Paul 5s and ad- justments. In connection with the last named there was & bid for $500,000 at 10. or S5z above Thursday's closing price. ‘This bid failed to secure any bonds, as they then were selling at 10%. Later $30,000 was bid for and bought at 11 and $100,000 more at 11%s. This was typical of the kind of market that prevailed for these descriptions. Junior ratlroad bonds have been the chief sufferers in the recent reaction and it was natural that they should have the swiftest recovery. But indus- trials and junior utilities did not lag. Paramount-Publix 5! for example, Tose 5 points. New York City Traction issues re- mained firm. All high-grade rail and utility obligations were in demand around their best prices of the year. United States Government bonds moved up to new tops for the vear, the most active being Liberty first and fourth 41,5, Liberty 31;s, Treasury 4Y4s and Treasury 4s. The Liberty first 4145 now cannot be called for payment until next June 15 and today's price advances were by way of adjusting the yvield to the existing money rates for that period. Municipal issues were firm and active German government 5';s gained fractionally and the Dawes reparations %s again crossed 70. Other Germans were also strong. Most European issues were firm Canadian government bonds were fractionally better. Canadian Pacific bonds were in brisk demand, especially the convertible 6s which, having a call nn the common stock at 25. reflected he improvement in the stock . GOLD STOCKS GAIN $16,393,000 IN ONE DAY By the Associated Press NEW YORK, September 16.—Amer- ica’s monetary u stocks were in- creased by $16,393,000 yesterday, result- ing partly from the retirement of French railroad bonds. The Paris. Lyons & Mediterranean Railroad Co.. which on August 15 re- tired $34,000,000 of its 6 per cent bonds, then outstanding in this market, today called for redemption $18,000,000 of its outstanding 7 per cent bonds. In both cases, the railroad provided fynds for the operation through an ar- rangement with the French government, which released gold held under earmark with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. To provide for the August re- demption, the French government re- leased about $28.000,000 of gold. In addition to the changes in ear- mark, the Federal Reserve Bank re- ported that £389,000 gold had been received from England. For the week ended tember 14, the bank reported imports of $4.958.000 and there was an additional St b AT et 000 of gold through release Of & corresponding amount from earmark for foreign account.
