Skinner of Tazewell Coun- ty held to the grand jury for the death | of Martin Virant, 37, East Peoria miner. Virant, held as a witness in an inves- tigaticn into the slaying of Lewis Nelan a saloon brawl, was found dead, | hanging from the door of his cell in the Tazewell County Jail September 1. He previously had been questioned by ‘Tazewell cfficers. It was reported at the time he had committed suicide. After an examination of the body by Dr. Willlam D. McNally, Chicago path- ologist, however, Skinner was arrested end freed in $20,000 bail on a charge of killing Virant by third-degree methods, The jury, after listening to Dr. Mc- | Nally yesterday. decided Virant “died of injuriés and shock resulting from ex- ternal violence inflicted by others than himself while in the custody of the sheriff of Tazewell County.” It recom- mended that the grand jury make a thorough investigation into possible im- plication of persons other than Skinner.
