The 2 les looke easy. The s of what little bad usage we got will all be eliminated by a night's sleep and a hot bath. But how pleas- ant it ses the green flelds outside our porthole! We have been fortunate in our weather. We have not had to battle every mile as we did last Fall when we sailed this same little ship from New England to Bermuda Of course. ng our passage from Bermuda we have had to sample all kinds of weather, but it did not blow a whole gale at any time. For three however, the d was strong gh to make sailing practically im- possible. On two days, with the wind blowing from the East and rain pour- ing down, we hove to, using sea anchors. We occupied our idle time by resting and reading quite comfortably below. During these days the Ochito drifted back about 25 miles. Water Spouts Cause Anxiety. When the wind was westerly the Ochito sailed along nicely, under a flatted jumbo sail, making mileage for us, while again we rested. On both oc- casions the seas were steep and we were getting some water on deck. But the Ochito rode easily and we knew there was nothing to fear. We merelv had to wait until the wind moderated. Un- doubtedly the most anxious time we had was when we were lying dead idle on a glassy smooth sea one calm evening, physically very comfortable, mentally much disturbed by numerous water spouts and spout-bearing clouds moving all about us. Sometimes spouts amount to nothing more than strong gusts of wind that will damage cnly sails. But other times they have sufficient force to destroy a beat instantly, carrying up green water in a column as high as a city block is Jong This time none came nearer to us than a quarter mile. Under the laws of probability we should not have bothered about them, but gone to sleep until ‘he wind came. However, lying helple s quite a different feeling from ing against the seas and winds. We didn't enjoy thoce two or three hours. ©On board we lived comfortably, keep- 1y regular hours, though we were ort on sleep. As we were leaving Bermuda a boy who had been very he'pful t> us while we were there, and who, like us, is afficted with restless feet, pleaded to be taken along. He said he could bz ready in 15 minutes and could work. So we took him This lad helped with the heavy work. But to keep a true course, especially in the usual quartering seas, Mrs. Crowley or I had to keep the wheel m:st of the time. Our deck hand found it almost impossible to concentrate on the compass, feeling evidently that just to steer was enough and that the direc- tion ke tcok was mcre or less im- material. - It didn’t do any good for Mrs Crowley to tell him terrible tales lors strayed in the doldrums or nd for months. tretch at night y chief watch was ost trying and only reglly ur- ble work I had, especially as we were threatened by or overtaken by heavy squalls many nights.
