LONDON, June 30.—The Bank of England today reduced its discount rate from 21 to 2 per cent. The bank rate was reduced on May 12 from 3 to 2'5 per cent. On April 21 the rate was lowered from 3'2 to 3 per cent. The reduction on May 12 was greeted with cheers in the Stock Exchange, and gains were immediately reported on securities of good yield. The bank rate stood at 6 per cent from the time Great Britain went off the gold standard last Fall until Feb- ruary 18, when a series of cuts was started which in littie more than four months has brought the rate down 4 per cent. | ¥'s reduction brings the rate to the lowest point since 1897, when it !once before reached 2 per cent. The recent reduction of the Federal Reserve | Bank rate at New York and the (‘On-[ tinued fall of discount rates, as well as | slack trade and scarcity of bills in the | money market, were chiefly responsible | for today's move. It also is the continuation of a cam- paign for cheap money begun with the | main object of diverting the flow of | foreign moneys from short-term bonds into long-dated stocks in order to help big conversion tchemes and effect & considerable saving on interest pay- ments. NEW YORK, June 30. — Saturday will be a day of greatly reduced busi- ness in the financial district due to the closing ot all security exchanges and several commodity markets. It was said in authoritative quarters today that the Stock Exchange has no intention of suspending trading or Sat- urdays during July and August as ru- mored recently in some brokerage STOCKHOLDERS SEEK COMPANY REPORTS Investors Are Writing to Corpora- tion Heads Requesting Informa- tion on Dividend Prospects. | BY BERNARD S. O'HARA, | Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, June 30.— In happier | days stcckholders were sometimes cen- sured for their apparent lack of inter- est in management, but now executives complain that their desks are piled high with letters demanding explanation of low prices and reduced dividends. “They want the company, | leading corporation official, “to assume | the burden of deciding many things | which it cannot pcssibly do. Some | stockholders request an unequivocal | | promise that the dividend will not be | reduced. The United States Rubber Co., for instance, always drew a large gathering of stock- | holders to its annual meeting. An in- teresting talk by the then president, the | late Samuel Colt, on the company's busi- | ness and prospects and a well guided inspection tour of one of the company’s principal plants were part of the pro- gram.
