D. C, MONDAY, JUNE 27, 1932. FINANCIAL. FINANCIAL NG STAR, WASHINGTON, BONDS IRREGULAR INACTIVE TRADING U. S. Government and Prime Utility Issues Higher—Rail Group Sags. BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Epecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, June 27.—Bonds were irregular in active trading today, While United States Governments and prime utflity bonds trended higher and for- eign dollar issues held their levols, do- mestic railroad bonds, which comprise the buik of the corporation list, were £herply lower The market opened with a firm tone. bu. the many railrcad reports over the weck end made poor reading and there was a tendency to get out of carrier securities. Lotses of a point or more occurred early in Canadian Pacific 4s, Baltimore & Ohio first 4s. Chicago | seat Western 4s uri-Pacific 5s, New York Central 3.5, Nickel Plate 6s, Northern Pacific 6s, Frisco 4'.s and others. Later, part of the losses were | recovered, especially in the more specu- | lative bonds. | The New York Central was granted | 8 $13,600.000 loan for three years by the Reconstruction Finance Corpora- tion. The Interstate Commerce Com- .on modified its approval of a $10,- 000908 R F. C. loan to the Rock Island 10 fermit the road to apply $4,125.000 | to ba~k loans, $1.253.480 in payment of | eguipment trust maturities and $4.621.- 519 to pay fixed interest obligations ma- | turing between May 1 and September 1 United States Government long-term | bonds continued to rise still infl B by the recent reduction in the count rate and the apparent gold exports. In early were 15 to % higher, but a s of the improvement was cance mid-day. H.:b grade utility descrip- tions were fin ~ American telephone 58 of 1950 galneti fractionally. Peoples’ Gas 55 were & polat higher. Sout western Bell Telephone 5s, and Penn sylvania Power & Light 4l,s were strong. Industrials also displayed a good tone. Youngstown Sheet & Tube 5s were & point higher. Armour of Dela ware 528 gained 2 points. Conserva tive issues such as Standard Oil of New Jersev 5s, General Motors accept- ance 6s, Standard Oil of New York 41os | and Western Electric 5s were little changed. : Scme of the sharp movements in corporation securities can be traced to| the imminence of July 1, one of the most important settlement dates of the year. About $800.000.000 in interest | and dividends is payable on that day and total settlements for the month of July amount to about $1,500,000,000, in- cluding Government maturities. Hence rospects for the payment of July 1 Prtereat or dividends carry great weight Jjust now. Ontario Power Service 5'%s today continued their rapid advance of last week, chiefiy on prospects that the coupon due July 1 will be met, since Ontario Hydroelectric has announced its intention of taking over the Abitibi Canyon profect, which Ontario Power Service cannot complete because of its inability to raise $5.000,000. Abitibi| Power 5s also were strong. The latter company guarantees the Ontario Power Serviee bonds. The foreign list was heavy. German government issues held their levels fairly well, while German municipals and corporation obligations, such as German General Electric 7s and Sie- mens & Helske 6los were depressed. | Ttaly 7s lost a point, as did Polish 7s. | Other Europeans had smaller declines. | South American issues were firm. BY FRANK I. WELLER, Associated Press Farm Editor. The late upturn which carried wheat around 1'; cents above the week’s new lows for the season apparently was predicated on the grasshopper menace In Canada and black rust talk in the American Northwest. Developments in Spring wheat which till s to pass through the critical | stage seem to be the principal price- {making factors for the immediate | future, Turning Point. Considered an investment under 5) price the turning point. Saturday close at Chicago was 477« for July contracts. One operatcr told the pit crowd sidering the steady decline in open interest it must be “drunk” to sell In the fortles, particularly with the mar- ket in a technical position to respond to tangible doubts about the Spring wheat outcome. He backed his opinion with substan- tial purchases His actions usually attract a considerable following Although there are about 10 black rust scares to each year of actual dam- age the next six weeks will be an open sezson for alarm. The di has been defintely identified at Redfield, S. Dak., and reported from Nome, N. Dak. | While early svmptoms have not shown n Spring wheat until the forepart of July in most past seasons the crop is fully 10 days ahcad this year. * The sections in which it is expected to spread include Western Minnesota, South Dakota east of the Missouri River, all except southwestern portion of North Dakota, Manitoba and most of Saskatchewan. Weather conditions will determine the amount of damage. Spring wheat continued to make rapid growth during the week, heads appearing In parts of South Dakota and Minnesota where crops of 25 bushels to the acre were forecast. Average yields are still in prospect for Canada although, as in the Red River Vallev, grasshoppers are ecausing dam- age in Manitoba and Saskatchewan Losses up to 30 per cent have been caused by cutworms in important Canadian areas. Harvesting of Winter wheat has ad- vanced well into the Ohio Valley and into western areas of the Missouri River. The movement to market has been slow because wet weather forced most cutting to be done with binders. So far Southwestern mills have been able to absorb the new ‘crop, but if combines get into the fields by July 5. as anticipated, a larger movement to market is expected. Foreign observers feel that Europe can no longer be independent of North American values with Southern Hemis- phere shipments declining. Argentine exports for the week were about 1,000,- 000 bushels under last year and Rus: slan exports nil. However, nearby wheat is plentiful Large shipments can be obtained in two important that con- underselling the United States it may be hard to convince foreigners their price is 10 cents too low. Even Argen- tine wheat is 5 cents over Kansas City the widest spread yet. New American wheat is running to gulf ports and Black Sea shippers are scheduled to re- sume within a month Dry weather in North America or a wet harvest in Europe are about the only hope of improved world prices in the next two months. Yields in Italy are generally satisfac- tory; France expects a crop equal to domestic_requirements; estimated increase of about 27,000.000 bushels over last vear, and Germany about 37,000,000 bushels Grain Market By the Associated Press.
