By the Associated Press ST. PAUL, May 28 —Winter returned for a curtain call in the Northwest and farmers stood up and gave it a great big hand. It wasn't that they were happy to see newly sprouted crops covered with up to 10 inches of snow which came yes- terday in sections of North Dakota. But it meant that they had enlisted a force- ful ally in their fight on a serious in- vasion of grasshoppers. Sensitive young hoppers, emerging from soil when they have just hatched, were incapable, entomologists said, of | surviving the blast of cold which drove | down temperatures and brought chilling rains and snow flurries over a wide area. Aberdeen, S. Dak., reported a_drop of 30 degrees from Wednesday to Thurs- day, with temperatures in South Da- kota, North Dakota and Minnesota gen- erally ranging from 35 to 45 degrees. At Jamestown, N. Dak., as much as 10 inches of snow was reported. Else- | fined to rain. TO “CITY SLICKERS” HERE Meets Waterloo in One of the Old- set of Bunko Games and Ap- peals for Police Help. Shubert Shortt hails from New York. reputed stronghold of “city slickers,” | but it was in Washington that he met his Waterloo yesterday in one of the oldest of bunko games. The New Yorker registered at the Ambassador Hotel yesterday morning and decided to go for a stroll. Just outside the hostelry he engaged in con- versation with a’ pleasant man who spoke with a cultured Bostonian ac- cent. Shortly afterward they met a friend of .the Bostonian who spoke with a Scottish twang. The conversation drifted toward gambling, with the Scotsman affirming it was easy to bunko a man by matching coins. “The Bostonian disagreed and the Scotsman said he would show how the trick was done, but the Bostonian won consist- ently. Finally Shortt became involved. | ‘When he had lost $20 his companions | ceparted. | Now he wants police to find the two slickers and get back his money. PRODUCTS DISPLAYED BY PHARMACY STUDENTS G. W.
