On the third floor the plans show provision for the card division, where cross references of the literature of the world will be housed. Libraries and individuals the world over now call on this division for information concern- ing books and lists of volumes. The storage capacity of the existing library facilities for this division now amoun to0 75,000,000 cards, and with the addi- tional quarters in the annex this total would be doubled, with space available also for future expansion, it is explained. Economy Governs Plans, Space on the fourth floor about the ! stacks would provide for air condition- ing equipment and storage., Placement of some of the equipment here, it is explained, serves economy since it would be impractical in a building of its size to place all the equipment in the basement, due to the length of the ducts and because of the amount of lost space. All these quarters and equipment are to be provided with an outlet to the public, to carry into practical use the tremendous volume of knowledge stored in the mammoth collection of writings housed in the Library of Congress, There will be added space for use of the public which will enlarge the con- ception of the Library of Congress as a “research university” for serious-minded students, In the story above the first setback of the building will be two large reading rooms, and between them , spacious quarters devoted to the requirements of a card index section of a size to meet the requirements of the listings in both } the annex and the main building. In alcoves off the reading room will be a series of quarters for catalogues, Special collections will be placed in the space just outside and surrounding the catalogue alcoves and outside of this portion will be a cordon of two tiers of private study rooms for scholars where one engaged in a special study may be assigned to a room and have the neces- sary volumes brought there to him for undisturbed work. There will be 86 rooms in each tier, making 172 in all, the building plans reveal. Sound to Be Absorbed. The reading roams each will be ap- proximately 88 feet by 50 feet in net size. There will be accoustic properties in the construction of the reading rooms for sound absorption. Intricate me- chanical equipment will serve to trans- port the volumes and other reading materials about the library plant for quick use and return. Pneumatic tubes Wwill carry the books and cards speedily through the building. There will be two control desks off the reading rooms and a central control for the entire building. An important portion of the facilities will be the photostat quarters in the basement, with a section for the official use of the Library of Congress and a section for public use.
