FI GOVERNMENT BOND | LIST IN RECOVERY Long-Term Issues Rally Cor- porate Group in Steadier Trend. _ BY F. H. RICHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK. May 26.—United States | Government long-term bonds rallied to- day and closed narrowly higher after | having dropped sharply to new lows on | the movement in early trading. | The turn in Governments came in the | last hour and reflected a recovery in stocks and advices from Washington that Congress hoped to be able to reach | a compromise on“ the sales tax pro- posals. The general corporation list steadied somewhat with Governments in the late trading. but was still \down sharply on the day and at its Jowest Jevel in manv yvears. ‘Treasury 3s and 3'ss and Treasury 4',s made the best gains in the Gov- ernment '~ Municipal issues also | Ppushed ahead. 10 Wes i Of bids that kept corpora- tion descriptions down. Dealers re- roflvfl offerings of many mcre bonds han they could meet with bids. ‘The market openca with a barely steady tone. The absence of any an-! nouncement regarding the expected formation of a bond pool by the recently appointed Bankers and Industrialists’ Committee caused the withdrawal of many bids. At the start traders were testing the market with offerings of single bonds. These were fairly well absorbed, but when as many as five bonds were offered in an active issue prices broke badly. Volume increased | on_the decline. Nothing seemed exempt from the trend. High-grade prior lien descrip- tions were thrown into the market with as little discrimination as that exercised in the case of bonds already selling at prices ordinarily associated with receivership and default. Ameri- can Telephone 5s, for instance, broke more than & point. as did American ‘Telephone Collateral 5s. American Sugar Refining 6s lost a point. So did New York Gas, Electric Light, Heat & Power 5s. Sharp declines occurred in such sea- soned securities as West Shore Guar- anteed 45, United Electric & Power 5s, New England Telephone 4!3s, Midvale S¢eel 5s, Duquesne Light 4'ss. Consoli- dated Gas 4':5, Atchison General 4s, Baldwin Locomotive 5s and many others. New York City Traction were weak, partly because of the general downturn and partly, it was reported. because of the liquidation of the holdings of an individual known to have been heavily interested in local traction securities. Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit 6s broke 4 points. Hudson & Manhattan Income S5 lost 41;. Losses of 1 to 3 points af- fected the obligations of Interborough Rapid Transit, Third Avenue Railway and Manhattan Rallway. Trading was less active in speculative bonds which have already depreciated from 70 to 95 per cent of their value. But price movements here were sharp on the turnover of only a few bonds. Junior railroad issues like Southern Pacific 4125, Northern Pacific 3s, Nickel Plate 6s. New York Central 5s, Mis- souri-Pacific 3s, Great Northern First 4'.s. Erie General Lien 4s, Baltimore & ©Ohio 4758 and Chesapeake Corporation 5s lost 2 to 4 points. Industrials also were weak, notabiy Wheeling Steel 5!,s, Pure Ofl 5'2s and Goodrich 6!2s. New York Cotton En-cisl Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK. May 26.—After an early loss of about 15 points on foreign selling and weakness in securities today, the cotton market steadled and closed with | a loss of 4 to 7 points on the day. The afternoon improvement in the stock market had a sympathetic influ- ence on cotton and the best figures of the day were reached in the last hour. Spots were reduced 10 points to 5.65. BY ROLLIN M. CLARK. At this time, when there is a con- certed cry in the insurance business for fewer fire insurance agents, a ruling Just issued by the attorney gemeral of TNlinois that State banks are not per- mmitted under their charter powers to act s insurance agents will attract Nation- wide interest, ' Organised insurance agents through- out the country have long opposed so- called “bank agencies.” They have Tegarded the creation of insurance agen- cles in banks as an un ted en- croachment upon thelr legitimate fleld of tions, that the real opera , contending ‘| motive behind such appointments is the desire of the banks to com- missions for the placing of policies which they require in connection with their lending operations. So intense has been the feeling on the subject that the National Associa- tion of Insurance Agents 10 years ago urged its members to refuse to repre- sent companies that appoint banks as their agents. A number of insurance companies subsequently withdrew all such appointments, but others have continued bank agencies with suc- cess. Such business as bank agencies ay obtain is usually considered highly desirable because of the banks’ personal knowledge of the affairs of their insured. (Copyrisht, 1933.) Grain Market By the Associated Press CHICAGO, May 26.—After breaking to almost 3 cents under Monday's high point the wheat market today rallied rather sharply in the late dealings. Price setbacks were ascribed largely to beneficial crop results exepected for Spring wheat, returns showing nearly 3 ° inches rain at places in the Dakotas. Later, though, a blizzard Northwest was reported, and there were estimates that Spring wheat acreage in the four prin- cipal States would show a decrease of 15 per cent compared with last year.
