S. Group and Few Cor- poration Issues Resist General Trend. BY F. H. RICHAKDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, April 11 —After a firm opening, bonds slurped into new low ground today, the only group resisting the decline being United States Govern ments and a very few prime corporation descriptions. Even foreign dollar bonds dipped, Germans slipping because of the anxiety over the gains made by the Hitlerites in the German elections, al. though President von Hindenburg's vic- tory was acclaimed The German elections, President' Hoover's progress toward economy mea: ures at Washington, the granting of arious loans by the Reconstruction Finance Corporation and the prospects for higher wheat prices all lent aid to those working on the constructive side, and opening prices were firm. But the list started to slide again when stocks failed to maintain their initial rallying tendencies, There was an utter lack of anything encouraging in trade news over the week end and this, combined with heavy liquidation still coming from dis- tressed investors, individual and cor- porate, served to send prices downward. 1In spite of the granting of an $18.000,000 loan to the St. Louis-Southwestern so that the road can meet its June 1 ma- turity of consolidated 4s, other rails were weak. Rock Island refunding 4s dipped 2 points, and the convertible 4%,s of the same road were 2'. points Jower. Chesapeake Corporation 5s dropped a point. Baltimore & Ohio first 55 eased. There were losses in New York Central 55, Pennsylvania 6%:s and Missouri-Pacific 5s. Cotton Belt 4s ran up 17 points on the news of the loan to meet them, but later reacted because of the ’ Street's opinion that & part cash settlement will be made. FRANK L WELLER, As50 Press Farm Edit | Although wheat is selling in a { weather market it still is affected by action in securities and there is trade opinion that grain values reflect last week's late upturn in stocks. It was principally because of pre- vious weakening in securities that W futures had backed awa higher eround and corn futures had dropped to the lowest level since 1900 Liguidation in all grains was on an enormous scale and found the market without support. Just as that was true the trade believes that with advance ecurities and a little broadening of ide interest higher prices will be BY | the | some The market already is reflecting a demand for commission house response to stronger cables, continued lack of precipitation in the Spring and Winter wheat belt and returning buyer con- fidence abroad. It was noteworthy that despite the decline in futures, domestic wheat markets were firm as a of light offering and a fairly mill demand. the close on April 8 prices at s City were 1 to 2 cents higher than week ago, soft Winter wheat had advanced as much as 4 cents a bushel at St. Louis, No. 1 dark northern, 3 to 5 cents over the May price Minneapolis and Pacific Coast markets were steady to higher. The most important of the strength ening influences was the less favorabl prospect for Winter wheat and the de- layed seeding of Spring crops. The Government reported the condition of Winter wheat on April 1 as 758 per cent of normal compared with the 10- year average of 80.9 per cent for that date. Acreage abandonment was estimated at nearly 14 per cent for the United States as a whole. While April 1 is too early for an accurate forecast of final production an analysis of condition and weather reports indicates a total outturn of Winter wheat of around 458,000,000 bushels, or about 330,000,- 000 less than last year's harvest. Against that is a private estimate that wheat stocks in store in all positions are 4,000,000 bushels larger than a year ago. Grain Market | By the Associated Press CHICAGO, April 11.—Fresh upturns grain prices early today accom- in domestic Winter wheat Southwest, A Jeading crop expert wired that from Bucklin, Kans,, through the Oklahoma panhandle and 150 miles into Texas fully half of the wheat crop was past Tecovery. BY JOHN A. CRONE. i NEW YORK, April 11.—Trifling gain: Exchange today were quickly erased the session progressed. Unlike in se | sions last week, the selling was not con- centrated in a few Midwestern cities, {but came from many quarters. Mo: of it was of the liquidating variety. Electric Bond & Share was down more than a point in forenoon dealings as Boston dispatches indicated that officers of the company in their own name held only a little more than or fifth of 1 per cent of the present 4, 965.489 shares. Cities Service was off fractionally, along with Standard Oil of Indiana and Standard of Ohio. Constructive news developments over the week end started a rise in overseas markets, which was not reflected here. Scattered reports of trade improvement from various financial centers had little market effect. Even the rally of Satur- day’s session and emphasis on the fa that several bear markets, especially that of 1921, turned upward after the the liquidation. Commodity declined again. and the steel re were hopeful rather than cheerful. Deere & Co. staged a moderate as it was pointed out that it has in working capital for every $1 of m ket valuation. Consolidated Ga. Baltimore, however, sold off more WS than sales of electricity by that the first two months cf 19 jonly .56 per cent from the s period. Ford Motor of Ca | dipped below the 9 level pointed out that buying power of the Western Dominion farmers must be restored before sales can turn upward. Pw (3). ot Parker Penn W it By the Associated Press, CLEVELAND, April 11.—Steel pro- ducers expect the first wave of buying from the automotive field this week, the magazine Steel sald. “Ford has taken prices on fender stock.” the magazine stated, and “a Northern Ohio mill has reopened on the strength of an order for strip and piates. Many mills report more liberal releases against old direct orders and | broader ingiury from parts makers. "It will take several weeks to put pro- duction above 1,000 and steel needs will accelerate gradually, but steel-making operations at Pittsburgh, Youngstown, Cleveland and Chicago should feel some impulse beginning this week. “This Ford influence may ‘turn the corner’ in steel production and supply a rebound from last week's decline of 1 point to 22 per cent. a rate no better than New Year week and the lowest then. Sentiment also was at its t ebb last week and the daily ingot rate in March eased to 52,253 tons, 24.6 per cent of capacity. “Helping the automobile industry to lighten the background of this dark picture of production is the noteworthy activity — considering the times — in building. Topped by the award of 8,600 tons for a bridge at Troy, N. Y., struc- tural awards last week totaled 17,303 tons, compared with a weekly average of 12,839 tons for 1932 to date. “Rallroads are ordering only track fastenings in quantity, but an.improve- ment in [reight traffic of Western lines and reopening of more repair shops build up hopes of slightly larger steel requirements. reign iron and steel are increas- ageravating, penetrating as far as Cleveland “Due mainly to reductions in foundry pig iron at Chicago and basic iron in % | Eastern Pennsylvania, Steel's iron and T o 5% | steel price composite this week is off 7 Tubize Chatel B..., 2 2%z | cents to $29.74, lowest since November, Tung Sol Lamp (1) 6 [1915.
