John Wedderburn, 63, retired pat- ent attorney and prominent Washing- tonian, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 810 "North Carolina avenue southeast, after a long illness. Funeral services will be held at his late home at 11 o'clock Friday morn- ing, with burial in Rock Creek Ceme- tery. Rev. F. A. Parsons of the Church of the Ascension, will officiate. Born Here in 1868, Mr. Wedderburn was born here in 1868, the son of George C. Wedder- burn, one of the editors of the cld National Intelligencer, and Virginia Lawrence Wedderburn, daughter of Judge De Witt Lawrence. He was ed- ucated at Central High School and at the United States Naval Academy. As a young man he becan quainted ‘with™ Senator George H reporter on his Examiner, In that capacity he secured a position in the Mare Island Navy Yard as a book. keeper, and it was through his wor the Senator was able to expose coal frauds. Mr. Wedderburn back to Washington as the Senator's secretary, and was a lifelong friend of i the Senator’s son, Willlam Randolph Hearst, publisher. Opened Patent Office. On Senatcr Hearst's death, Mr. Wed- derburn accompanied the funeral party back to the coast, and, returning to this city, entered the Press Bureau for Set- tlement of Indian Claims, in which he handled claims for some of the largest Indian depredations, Later he opened the patent law office, which became the largest in the world, employing more than 300 in its staff. He was a partner with Willlam Randclph Hearst in a joint claim business for some years and the L. F. Randolph (Co., which he estab- lished in 1913 and later sold to the late Victor J. Evans. Since his retirement from active business in about 1915 he has devoted himself to private interests both here and at Rehoboth, Del He is survived by his widow, Mrs Mzud Barbour Wedderburn, and two daughters, Mrs, Corinne Gates, wife of Comdr.
