BY GEORGE T. HUGHES. Special Dispatch to The St NEW TYORK, March 11.—A re- actionary trend was still in evidence in today's stock market, but it was so Ught as to carry no significance Stocks declined fractionally in the Quietest of trading, with only a few cases of real weakness and with a num- ber of issues moving against the trend. There was little in the outside news to change sentiment at the opening. The financial situation, as distinguished | from the business situation, provided reasons for optimism, but that has been true for some time. Omission of the dividend by International Telephone & Telegraph, announced after the close | yesterday, had been anticipated. | The best showing was made by the oil stocks under the leadership of Standard of New Jersey, in which in- vestment demand was making itself felt. Jersey Standard has always been a favorite with the small buyers, but their purchases would not count for the firmness in the stock today. Lower- priced oils were turned over in large volume without making much progress Another point of strenfth was A burn Auto which crossed $100 a share in the first hour, supposedly represent- ing the efforts of a new-born short in- terest to extract themselves with the least possible loss. J. I Case was su + ported for somewhat similar reasons. Against these could be set the heavi- ness of the standard issues. United States Steel was in supply on every rally and so was American Telephone & Telegraph. American Can, Allied | Chemical and some of the food shares sold off easily. Merchandising stocks were heavy, including Woolworth and Safeway Stores. Probably the selling in most of these came from operators who had concluded a temporary turn was due. The railway stocks moved with the industrials. Union Pacific and Atchi- son were off a point or two and a number of the railway preferred issues sold at or around their lows, including Baltimore & Ohio 2nd Reading. Not enough of the February earnings state- | ments are at hand to show how much benefit was derived from the wage cut, but so far indications are that the falling off in traffic offset savings on wage accounts. One factor that worked against the market was the delay in the motor car manufacturing program. Except for Auburn, which is in no wise typical, | automobile stocks sagged. Studebaker | made a new low, though only by a small fraction. Du Pont was down over a point. 6% Secured on new brick homes in preferred northwest resi- dential sections.
