The captain became seriously ill and there was no doctor on board A radio call was sent out to a ware ship, whose doctor radioed advice by which a difficult operation was per- formed by the chicf steward. The oper- ation was successful and the captain recovered. At a town in the extreme northwest of Australia a man met with an acci~ dent while riding on horseback. The postmaster at once got in touch with & doctor in Perth, and with an ordinary carving knife he amputated the man's right leg, following the instructions given by dots and dashes of the doctor 2,000 miles distant.
