With the novelty wearing off, there were only 21,300 automobiles recorded as crossing the Arlington Memorial Bridge yesterday, 10,000 less than a week ago. Beyond a small fire in some grease on the undercarriage of an au- tomobile, caused by friction on the brake bands, rapidly put out by United | States park police, there were neither accidents nor arrests. The Arlington Memorial Bridge and the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway are to be closed during the balance of this week under present plans, but Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, director of public buildings and public: parks, ex- pects that they will be open to the pub- lic permanently after about February 1. Park police authorities are considering | making traffic around the Lincoln Me- { morial plaza one way to avold confu- sion. The peak of yesterday's traffic was reached between 3:30 and 5 o'clock. Capt. R. C. Montgomery, superintendent o the park police, is anxious to have motorists keep on the right-hand_side of the highway, and this rule will be strictly enforced when the road comes under his jurisdiction permanently. The speed limit on the open stretches of the highway is 45 miles an hour, the same as that in Virginia generally, but motorists yesterday drove along leisurely. | MAN DIES FROM POISON | Louis Kaplan Registers at Hotel and Succumbs in Hospital.
