Resident Was Promi- nent in Alaska and Nome's First Mayor. Funeral services for Richard Stanley Ryan, prominent in the openi and development of Alaska, who di Sat- urday morning at Berkeley Springs, W. Va., were held at St. Vincent’s Roman Catholic Church of that city this morning at 10 o'clock, followed by in- terment in Greenway Cemetery there. Mr. Ryan, a native of Ireland, suf- fered an acute heart attack late in August, in New York City, where he had resided for the past elght years, and had been at Berkeley Springs about two months. Before coming to the United States, and while yet a resident of Waterford, Ireland, he was a leader in the Home Rule party. and, coming to this country, went almost directly to Alaska, where 'he immediately became & Jeading figure. | He was the first mayor ever elected in the territory—of the city of Nome— and had a prominent. part in shaping the territory’s first legislation, as its first delegate to Congress. He lived in Washington from about 1905 until eight or 10 years ago. He was one of the writers of the famous “Dick to Dick” letters, written during the Taft administration, which stirred the political world. The other party was Richard A. Ballinger, then Secretary of the Interior. It was dur- ing this time that Mr. Ryan was at the heights of his fight for private owner- ship of Alaska's rallway, in which he was heavily interested through his connection with one of the strong New York City financial growps. He was a close Roosevels. He. was married in 1917 to Miss Margaret Hauvermale, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P, Hauvermale of Berkeley Springs, by, whom he is sur- vived. Brimer, 34, well known Washingtonian and general manager of a national ice cream company for sev- eral vears, died yesterday in Chicago following a mastold operation. He had been il four days.
