WQMAN’S PAGE Beads Revived With a Difference BY MARY MARSHALL. EADS are in fashion again, but like everything else that has been revived in this season of revivals, they are in with 8 difference, They would have | to be, 100,” because few women who recall beaded dresses as we wore them seven or eight years ago would wel- come a return of dresses of that sort. Every one wore them then, and they wore them morning, noon and night, until fashion decided that she had enough of them. And even after they had ceased to be really smart there were still women who went on wearing dresses through sheer force of habit. Beaded dresses of those days ‘were. w shapeless, shiftlike affairs that even more shapeless be- cause of ‘the weight of the beads. The new beaded dress is not strewn LITTLE BENNY BY LEE PAPE. After supper pop was smoking and thinking in his private chair and ma ‘came it saying, Willyum, Nora would like to s to you, she wants to ask “your ldvfi,k What about, for Peet sake, pop said, and ma said, It seems to be something wsbout the stock- market. Yee gods, pop said. Well, bring her in, all the bad stock market advice has been given out by experts, so perhaps mine will be werth heering. And Nora came in and pop said, In the ferst place, Nora, my advice about the stock market is to get as far away from it as ble and then stay away and then n to no ferther advice on_the subjeck whatever. ‘Thank you very much, sir, but I'm in it now and Im all of a tremble about my 800 dollers, Nora said. 800 dollers, yee gods what did you buy? pop said, and Nora said, I bawt Amalgamated Standard International Locks and Keys, it was only 6 dollers a share and it seemed so cheep for anyt] with such a terrible long name when they. was asking-a hunderd dollars and more for things with little short names, and besides e milk mas gave me ‘a ‘tip on it and he gets around a lof and he awt to know if & 11l look it up and see what its doing today, but I fear the werst, pop said. And he started to look on the Locks and “Keys, this, it closed at 9 what a milk man, you've made over 500 dollers. N Glory be, I resign, Ive needed a lit. tle vacation for years and now Im go: to take it, 11l be leaving at the end of the week, Nora said. And she went with beads, and it is not the sort of dress you would wear for every and any occasion. Usually it is an evening dress or one of those dresses that you don between darkness and daylight and that are known as the cocktail dress or the late afternoon dress. Usually the beads are concentrated, appearing as a small yoke or as a bo; ler or band. And this it seems to us is & much more attractive way to dis- pose of beads than to strew them over the entire dress. The sketch shows one of the new dresses in which the beads appear as border to a deep collar and as ends to the narrow sash tying at the front. In many of the shops you can buy bands of bead trimming that may be used in various ways to provide a smart trimming to a dress of chiffon or geor- gette. Small glass beads are used for this trimming, but occasionally you will find trimming of larger wooden beads that may be used on heavier materials —silk crepe or even one of the lighter wools. BY FLORENCE LA GANKE. Narfy's stay at the hospital had delayed the doing of many routine pleces of work. Usually her Christmas cakes were made in November. This year it seemed as if she never could get at them. Lois promised to come over with her young daughter “Andy” to spend the day. Andy was young Peter’s adoring slave and baby. Sue slept and ate and lived according to schedule. “Thank ess for the good start she had at the hospital” Nancy always said. The ry order had been given and delivered the day before Lois came. That same evening Nancy had washed the raisins and currants and dried them in the warming oven. She was using sliced citron and fruit peels. Had she purchased the peel in buik she would have warmed it in the oven before put- ting it through the chopper or before slicing it. Here is her recipe—an old and treas- ured family one: One pound butter, one pound flour, one pound sugar— either brown or white, 12 eggs (Nancy used some she had put up in water glass), one teaspoonful each of cinna- mon and nutmeg. one half teaspoonful cach of ground mace, cloves, allspice and salt, one square chocolate, three pounds raisins, two pounds currants, one-half pound each citron, lemon and orange peel, two tablespoonfuls lemon juice and one quarter cupful grape juice or coffee. Nancy creamed sugar and butter, added egg yolks. She added spices to tlour, dredged peels with it and combined mixtures. Then she put in chocolate, melted with one table- | spoonful hot 'water, the lemon juice and | grape juice or coffee. She folded in stiffly beaten egg whites. Mixture was now ready to go into pans. Potato Croquettes. Chop one small sweet green pepper and one medium sized onion fine, then cut four slices of bacon into small pleces. Fry the bacon slowly for five minutes, then remove from the pan and slowly cook the green pepper and onion in the drippings for 15 minutes, or until tender. Combine this with two cupfuls of mashed potatoes, add the fried pleces of bacon, half a teaspoonful of salt and one well beaten egg. Mix all the ingre- dients well, shape into patties and fry to a golden brown. ODDITIES BY CAPT. ROSCOE FAUCETT. YOU may not care particularly for bouilon made from cubes alone— but you will find that a cup of con- somme made from the cubes and used as stock to finish & sauce or gravy adds greatly to the flavor of the sauce. Smartly designed oil cloths already pinked out, ready to be turned into in- stantaneous curtains, are being shown for use at kitchen windows. They come in a dull, silky finish and in amazingly lovely colors and patterns. Ever consider flavoring the ice cubes that you intend using in cold bever- ages? Thus, lemon, orange or Blnelp le flavored cubes for the cocktall combi- nations; tea or coffee flavored cubes for those beverages? Might not be a bad idea to keep on hand a few strong: ly flavored coffee cubes to cool dad’s coffee when he is in a hurry to be off in the morning, but dislikes to dilute his hot drink with an overdose of cream or plain’ water. Save the stems of mushrooms, scrape them and slice them finely and saute them. They will give a delightful flavor when added to gravies, to creamed limas, peas, carrots or escalloped egg- plant. HIS writing has many different slants. e whole page gave a rather uneven, - ap- + pearance, esting & writer who finds l’z“%'nrd to do things with her hands, Although she may have learned to do some types of hand- easily | ne work, it probably did not come or naturally for her, but was the re- sult of much time and patience. The capital “I” is unique. Notice that it has a large upper loop with practically no base. This may be in- terpreted in either of two ways. The writer is perhaps the type who has fine abilitles and great confidence in herself. Her difficulty would tend to be in lack of ability to express herself. It would be hard to demonstrate the practicality of her ideas to others, be- cause of this difficulty in self-expres- sion. On_the other hand, it may be that she lacks the proper amount of self-confidence and for that reason finds 1t hard to convince others of her worth. In such a case, any degree of public recognition would be a real sur- prise to her. ‘The “r” and “n” suggest a tendency to be very critical. She may be very quiz- zical about the work of others, even though she is interested in them in a personal way. She seems the kind of person who would be hard to convince of the feasibility of any new ideas or plans. Once decided that the thoughts were good, however, Wi surel devote all possible energles to their furtherance. She should avold withdrawing too much from her friends. This would perhaps be an unconscious act which she would not realize until she had been eliminated from many pleasures. She should surely make the effort to go out and mix freely with people.
