DESGRIES PLEAT OF JWS I ELROPE Dr. Kahn Says Hundreds of Thousands Are Facing Poverty and Hunger. By the Associated Press NEW YORK, November 26.— Dr. rope face a crisis which may develop into an “irremediable catas- trophe” as the outgrowth of world economic _conditions, Dr. Kahn, who is European director of the American Jewish Joint Distribu- tion Committee, outlined the situation which confronts the organization he Tepresents before he was to sail on his return to Europe to resume his activities in Jewish relief work ‘The misery of millions of men, wom- en and children in these lands, he said, ] Shantz, Mr. Herbert H. A new wave of poverty among the Jews is sweeping all over Europe, he added Asks Continued Support. Dr. Kahn recently came to this country to report to Jewish leaders the plight of Jews abroad, after he had made a tour of the countries in East- ern and Central Europe. He asked for continued support of the work launched by the organization in the various flelds of social recon- struction, emphasizing the urgent need of help at this time. The American Jewish Joint Distribu- tion Committee, like the American Red Cross, is a world-wide organization car- rying on relief and social welfare work among the Jews the world over, and has as its head Felix M. Warburg. It was organized in 1914, and since that time has expended over $80,000,000 raised from American Jewry for relief | and reconstruction work among their co-religionists in foreign countries. In his farewell statement to the Jew: of America, Dr. Kahn pointed out that in Poland alone 100,000 Jewish families with about 75,000 children are now on the verge of starvation. Practically half of Polish Jewry is now without work and in the last few years, he said, 70,000 Jewish merchants and industrial- ists were forced to close their shops and factories. 400,000 Suffer in Rumania. In Rumania, he said, 400,000 face poverty, and in Subcarpathia there is intense suffering among the 80,000 Jews in that country. Destitution is in- creasing among the Jews, he added. in Czechoslovakia, Latvia, Austria, Hun- ry and now in Germany, where for- merly a rich Jewish life existed. “A new wave of poverty is sweeping over the Jews of Europe” he said. “Every country is affected and the sit- uation among the Jews in these lands is much more tragic than at any time since the World War. “Although the Jews in the various countries do their utmost to help them- selves, the possibility for self-help is very limited. Jews who were once rich have been reduced to poverty, yet the Poor man gives to the still poorer. The Jewish communities, too, are without means and cannot come to the rescue.” SOCIET (Continued From Fourth Page.) Haddox, Maj. Clayton E. Mr. Dan Quarrells, Mr. Marcus rdt, Mr. Benjamin F.
