Music and Musicians RBV;OW! flnd Ner ! Chace-Shafer Reci* Wl Given at Wardman Theater. COLORFUL program of solo and duet dances was given Jast evening at the Wardman Park Theater by Marian Chace and Lester Shafer with George Cornwell at the piano. The two dancers follow the Den- tshawn school and within this range of for- malistic inter- pretations they showed variety and sometimes considerable dr:’ matic in- tensity. Miss Chace was particularly eful in the movements of her arms and hands. The first authentic note was struck in her “Study in ‘White,” Wh(‘:’? she appeared in :mutsgque pose, swathed in two white veils which extended quite @cross the stage. The management of these, while simply done, Was Marian Chaee. slightly disturbing. The second duet, an “Idyll.” was a charming study in greens, while the dancing showed freshness and & springlike ex- uberance. The beautiful white satin costumes of the Beethoven “Minuet” were & joy to the eye and the polished gen- tleman and coy mademoiselle added their charm as well, Marian Chace's next solo, a study of the “Fictional Character of Lucrezia Borgia,” with a “Nocturne Satanique,” by George Cornwell, played in the background, ‘was an expression of genuine emo- tional fervor. She accented this in- tensity by a sudden frightened flut- tering of the hands, a quick change of her body to a long sweeping curve of supplication, sudden vacillations back and forth, a final revenge suc- ceeded by remorse, and the whole climaxed in a powerful yet feminine gesture of triumph. Miss Chace’s interpretation was sincere and con- vincing. Her “vl(em}eu ‘Waltz" was t quite so satisfactory. mugter Shafer reached two high points in his solos. First in “Kwahu ! the Eagle” taken from the Hopi {' Indian drama. The costume, one of Ted Shawn's, had white, droop- ing feathers as wings, Tattling bones below the knee, the whole accented ' by black hair and red decorations. There was power in the thumping ! feet-and wild spirits that came to !} & sudden break when the eagle steg- 71 gered, wounded, to rise again and ! gpread its wings wide in wnfihulon. ! Mr. Shafer'’s “tour de force” how- ever, was the “Song of Sinbad. Here one had no murmfitms sense 4 of technical . difficulties. One I"watched, fascinated, the snimated | telling of stories, the wooing of & lady love, Sinbad's despair at the prospect of being buried alive at her death and his miraculous release, all this being portrayed with vigor- | ous rhythmic gestures, injected by | & rollicking sense of humor. During n&e program George (;m-h:‘-’ ell played two° groups O | P flr!% included Tschai- " “Trolka” and Rachman- inoff’s “Polichinelle.” The second created a real stir. As. programmatic music it is enticing and was played throughout with real interpretive insight. Mr. Cornwell's accompani- ments for the dances, especially in the latter part of the program, were done with technical mastery and yersatllity of style. D. C. - Talk on Tudor Music | Given by Sade C. Styron. HIGHLY interesting and delight- ful was the talk on Tudor music \ which was ‘givan yesterday by Sade ‘' C. Styron for the American Asso- clation of University Women, in its ‘well filled club rooms. /| covered so large & subject in so short a time well. Omitting the | liturgical musie (but not failing to | point out its greatness), she confined K:mlt to the madrigal, the ayre and the keyboard music. The talk was amply illustrated by the Madrigal Singers, directed by Mrs. John Syl- vester., ‘They sang madrigals by ‘i Morley, Gibbons, Este and an ayre in parts by Dowland, and Elizabeth Watefs sung two songs by Ros- seter and Morley—all charmingly rendered—muchly liked. Treating the keyboard music, || Miss Styron emphasized that the | chief accomplishment of the Eng- I' lish virginalist was the variation. | She played two—“Tower Hill” by | aby, and “Why Ask You?” by Dr. John Bull | As one listened to these delightful ! eompositions one could not but won- der that this period of music is so ! neglected and so little known, Ital- | fan music of this period, to which ! composers and musicologists are ‘ harking back as to a new renais- i/ sance, contains nothing so lovely as || Dowland's “Come Again, Sweet i _Love,” or Rosseter's “What, Then, Is Bove but Mourning.” Miss Styron ' “'told of & day when music was more ! universally practiced and enjoyed DESIGN BUIL Miss Styron | of Capital's Programs. than has been ever since in England or in any other country, “the Golden Age of the Amateur,” offering a wealth of material to the student and music lover. But to even the professional this period is often un- femiliar. Miss Styron is doing a real serv- fce in these revealing discourses. The layman is not lost in a maze of technicalities, but is given correct and stimulating impressions through her enthusissm and the originality of her methods in her chosen fleld, the lecture-recital.
