BROOKHART BITTER ATCOLES DENAND Says Colleague Can Wait for Explanation Regarding John- son Presidential Boom. Senator Brookhart of Towa yesterday essailed his Republican colleague, Rep- resentative Cole of the same State, in reply to the latter's demand for an ex- planation of Brookhart's correspondence with William Hale Thompson, ex-mayor of Chicago, regarding a presidential boosting campaign for Senator Hiram Johnson of California. Mr. Cole was informed he could sit and wait for the information asked in his “discourteous and insulting” de- mand. “Did Andy Mellon and Bob Lucas tell you to do it?” Senator Brook- hart asked. I have no _cbjection” wrote the Senator, “to showing these leiters to anybody interested in Towa from Iowa's standpoint, but knowing that you have | always sucked eggs for the Wall Street crowd and betrayed your own State to | the financial interests, I have no in-| terest in disclosing anything to you unless your dictatorship compels it “I want further to assure you that I| did not assume to speak for you or any- body like you. That is impossible. No- body has ever been able to do that but | the Wall Street crowd. Neither have I gone into any private alliances with | anybody, although I have felt until your | letter that I had a perfect right to do as I pleased without offending your majestic sensibilities.” Brookhart asked Cole why he had not | THE ' EVENING Q TAR. WASHINGTON, D. C, TUESDAY, NOV IBER 24, 1931. From the Front Row Reviews and News of Washington.s Theaters. “The Constant Sinner” At the Shubert-Belasco. NE of the largest first-night audiences of the season, probably composed .of hus- bands without wives and, perhaps, even wives with- out husbands, greeted Miss Mae West and her play, “The Constant Sinner,” last night ‘at the Shubert- Belasco. It was not—as various flamboyant posters throughout the city have hinted—an evening of pure delight, rather one best described as il- jan post cards. 1t begen in one vein and ended in the same. One of the few surprising- ly 1ily-white lines came when Miss West said “I'd love to go to Paris. Then I can continue my music les- sons.” Miss West, as a matter of fact, was busy with things other than music last night. The play presents her as a galvanic street lady who suddenly finds herself married to a near-hun- dred-per-cent fighter. The fighter, becoming a “softy,” she leaves him to straighten himself out with her money at an Adirondack training camp, while she solaces herself with a Harlem partner in his place. Mae West, | the most part, had their birth there too. Miss West's art, however, is said to be apart from all that. While her favorite characterizations have to do with shady ladies whose speeches are a series of bar room classics, she is said to yearn for higher things—in fact, to next ap- pear as Lady Macbeth Judging from last night's perform- ance, Miss West's peculiar genius has to do with the way she walks, the way she hisses her “s's” and the way she can pound ou earthy remark. If she can squecze these into Lady Macbeth the should be very, very good—but can't the “lady with the light” may be otherwise. There is something about Miss Simply perfect—the Rolis Razor is the simplest safety made—just blade perfect as human hands can make it—accurate to time of perfect shaves. 400025 of an inch. It will give a life. H West that “gets them,” however. “I'm just too fascinated for words” said a person on our right last night. That seems to settle it—and the balcony last night settled it, too— laughing its head ofr. Other than Miss West's perform- ance of a sloppy person, there are two_really excellent bits done—one by Russell Hardie, one of the best of our younger actors, who as the fighting husband is inexplicably in love with bis wife, and by Paul Hu- ber, as the lawyer, who paints the wife so pure that she might from that moment stand with a lily in her hand for the remainder of the play. Incidentally, the inter- mixture of race in this play is not a pleasant quality. E. de S. MELCHER. “Sliding” Billy Watson Makes 'Em Laugh at Gayety. Evelyn Whitney, a brunette of the pleasing variety, adds color and charm to the show, while the Smith Sisters, proficient both in singing and dancing, introduce an original note. Josephine Flint, a “platinum blonde,” does several comedy numbers quite well and the Kane Brothers, with fast-stepping feet, team up' nicely with the Smith Sisters. F. L. C. Guy Bolton and George Middleton wrote this three-act comedy, in which a Mr. King, weighed down with the trials of an extravagant family and in-laws by the score, succeeds in escaping them all for a while by a sojourn to Brazil. Meanwhile Adam Smith, & confirmed bachelor, who has always longed for a home and its joys, takes his place and tries to manage this family in his own pecul- far style.
