LAND WAR LODHS N COLORADD AREA U. S. Tells Owners of Farms Eviction May Be Avoided by Homesteading. By the Associated Press. DENVER, October 16.—An incipient ubled many Colorado farm- despite assurance from the Department of the Interior that they would not lose their propery as a re- 1t of adjustment of the railroad land grants of 1867 Assurance that farm families would not be evicted in favor of homestead- ers was little consolation to the many who did not receive proper title or deed from the Union Pacific Railroad when they bought the land more than s half century ago. Must Homestead or Pay U. S. Land office attaches said these would have legal difficulty in resisting the claims of a “jumper.” The area in question embraces nearly 20,000 acres, which the Interior Department held to be the excess of the 1867 grant to_the Union Pacific. Present owners of the land, the local land office announced, must either homestead their farms or pay the Gov- emment $1.25 an acre, the price at which Government lands were allotted the railroads, Many of the farmers who grew old on the soil have retired and mented their farms to others. To homestead their property they will have to return and begin again. Repeal of Act Sought. Farm leaders said the fee of $1.25 an acre, because of present agricultural conditions, will prove an unbearable burden. Although the Interior Department's order throwing the land open to home- steaders was made in June, it di¢d not become generally known here until Jultan L. Kamerad, an ex-soldier, ob- tained homest and Charles B. Timberlake, Representa- tives in Congress, who now are seeking | to have the Government withdraw the homestead order. Veteran Files for Owner. Seeing Koch's predicament, John P. Boyle, also an ex-service man, obtained homestead rights to the farm of his father-in-law, Charles Wilson, to pro- tect the Wilson home from other home- steaders Few other persons have filed. Local officials saild they were discouraging prospective homesteaders who sought information concerning the ruling. New $7,000,000 Village on Map. LATTINGTON, N. Y. (#).—Here's & brand-new date line.
