FORT ST. JAMES, British Columbla, September 25.—A modest settlement of gold seekers is springing up at Rainbow Creek, scene of British Columbla's latest gold strike and objective of & new rush into the Omineca country. ‘The prospectors are either bullding cabins or construeting sluices and other devices used in placer mining. There is now the semblance of a small village where & few weeks ago there was little more than a wilderness of pine trees and gravel. The pay consists of gold which is fairly coarse and black sand which as- says have shown to contain values in fine gold, platinum and fridium. A good man picking and shoveling can wash probably six cubic yards of gravel daily. Taking as production an ounce of gold at $16 and assuming it to be produced from six yards of gravel, this would give a return of about $2.65 per yard. This is an unusually rich yjeld and it u not expected such values are likely to prevail throughout the whole deposit. So until the high values are proved to remain consistent throughout considered a bonanza.
