" | INTHEORY OF GASES Size of Molecules Found to Be Less Than Maxwell Computation. BY HOWARD W. BLAKESLEE, Assoclated Press Bcience Editor. BOSTON, September 22.—A new con- ception of the of mclecules of gases, redu them about one-third, is an- nounc in the proceedings of the American Soclety of Civil Engineers. ‘This reduction is based, the proceed- ings state, on what may prove to be & ‘startling discovery that in 1859 Maxwell made an error in his theory of the calculations of astronomers about the size and nature of the universe. It has bemuaedllsolnno? ractical ways to calculate the flow and gases through pipes and in varied scientific work. Maxwell’s theory has been ac- cepted universally as correct for all these calculations. I3 Must Change Text Books. ‘The error, says the article, will involve changes in ‘text books, hand books and all chemical and physical tables. The article is by Benjamin F. Groat of Boston, a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. It already has attracted comment by scientists on both sides of the Atlantic. Viscosity is illustrated by comparing the flow of water with that of “Molasses in January” The molasses has the ter viscosity, and for that reason e slower flow. Gases likewise viscosity. Fur- thermore, their molecules are in per- ual motion, about, bumping one another millions of times a second. The average distance a gas molecule can travel before collision is called its “free path.” Mr. ‘Groat says that Maxwell's error has led to calcu- late all these “free paths” at only Balf their actual lengths. He attributes the Maxwell error to confusing certain properties of mo- mentum and motion 5o that i sud been assumed that ‘“change of mo- mentum” means in the gas the same thing as “change of motion.” THE - EVENING class in the Municipal Museum of Rochester, N. Y., and placed in the ingenue lead in & New York show. When the leading woman of the show was suddenly taken ill at Rochester September 15 the manager frantically told his aids to scour the town for an intelligent and petite blonde to take the star’s place. By chance, Miss Koepke, who had played several minor roles in Rochester’s Little Theater, was recommended, chosen and cffered a contract all in 15 minutes. Miss Koepke is shown at her teaching blackboard, which she deserted for professional stage debut. —A. P. Photo. By the Assoclated Press. GRANITE, Okla, September 22.— Ten convicts from the State Reforma- tory here were trailed by possemen to- day while the woman warden probed circumstanges surrounding their escape last night. Mrs. G. A. Waters, the warden, sald none of the 770 other prisoners had made any attempt to flee and that she could advance no reason for the break by the fugitives. “They just wanted a wild adventure, I suppose,” she said. All the escaj prisoners, serving terms of from 2 to 30 years, were mem- bers of the kitchen crew. They seized knives and cleavers, overpowered three guards and took them in their flight in two motor esnhmown( to B e s e men, . J. N. Baughman, L. D. Jones and Ji 3 . G, Science New Map Throws More Light on Brain, A new map of the brain, the result of hundreds of surgical operations, was described in recent lectutes at the Uni- versity of London by Prof. Otfrid Foer- ster of Breslau. By stimulating with electricity vari- ous parts of the cerebral cortex which were bared when the skull was opened . Foerster has been able to differentiate the functions of small sections of the brain much more deli- cately than ever has been done before. He found the “seeing” area at the oved & trifie m':'n.m Dbegan t m a to move, the direction of movement dependis on just where the current was applied. Stimulation of the third area, which includes the greater of the occipital lobe made the patient see lights, stars, colors, geo- | fied metrical figures, persons and animals. ‘There is a narrow strip of tissue near TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 193 the center of the brain which controls t. Wherever the current is in this strip some part of the moves. Thus one spot is con- nected with the big toe, etc. Foerster found that specific areas controlled not of muscles, such as those or a finger, but even single But by increasing delicacy of elec- trical stimulation he was able to split this area into three tudinal parts. ‘When a narrow strip, lying in the wall of the central fissure of the brain, was severed from the region directly in front of it which normally responded in the same way, electrical stimulation of the latter produced only rotation of the head and trunk and bending and unben of the limbs on the opposite side. Hitherto the two parts have besn as a unit. Strong further toward the front of the brain resulted at first in the same body movements as were produced from the first area, but intensification of t stimulus produced epileptic-like con- vulsions.
